Thursday’s high schools: Northampton shuts out South Hadley 2-0 in girls soccer
Leah Tompkins and Galit Sarvet netted second-half goals as the Northampton girls soccer team downed South Hadley 2-0 at home Thursday.
Charlotte Maurer assisted on Tompkins’ score, while Sarvet bent in a corner kick for an unassisted tally.
Maya Kerstetter made four saves for the shutout for the Blue Devils (8-1-1). Alexis Gawron stopped six shots for the Tigers (2-7-3).
Belchertown 6, Central 0 — Breanne Moreau led the way for the Orioles (10-0-2) with three goals and one assist as they stayed unbeaten with an easy home victory.
Natalie Caney scored a goal and added two assists, while Jackie Soucia had one goal and one assist and Brittany Moreau tallied a goal. Jill Cavanaugh also provided an assist.
Sarah LaClair and Ashley Cavanaugh split time in goal for the Orioles, but neither recorded a save.
Hampshire Regional 4, Monson 4 — The Raiders (5-5-3) led the unbeaten Mustangs (10-0-1) by scores of 3-0 and 4-1, but settled for a draw in Westhampton.
Sarah Kober scored twice for Hampshire, while Savannah Waters and Siena Caron added one goal each.
Vanessa Groeber, Michelle Nardi and Elizabeth Hotham were credited with assists.
Brianna Weltlich made seven saves for the Raiders.
Smith Academy 4, Taconic 2 — Hannah Rickert scored a pair of goals at home to lead the Falcons (11-1) to their sixth straight victory.
Anna Gelotte had a goal and an assist in the win. Nicole Gay added a tally and Cassidy Snyder two assists.
Brooke Pashek made seven saves in net for Smith.
Gateway Regional 1, Athol 1 — Kendall Rooney tied it up on an assist from Sarah Stec as the Gators (7-3-1) came away with a road draw.
Brooke Fairman made five saves for Gateway.
Holyoke 2, Frontier Regional 0 — Camilla Baronas made 16 saves for the Red Hawks (0-8-2) in the loss on the road.
Smith Academy 4, Cathedral 1 — Emiko Barker had a hat trick in leading the Falcons (7-3-3) to the independent home victory.
Danielle Duseau also scored a goal in the win. Jen Adamites, Julie Muccino, Miranda Wendolowski and Meg Ryan each picked up an assist.
Lauren Bradford made seven saves for Smith, which is one point shy of qualifying for the postseason.
Minnechaug 4, Amherst Regional 1 — Jess Abdow scored from Shannon Hebert for the Hurricanes (2-6-2, 0-5 South) in the road defeat.
Nadia Squitiero made eight saves in goal for Amherst.
Northampton 1, East Longmeadow 1 — Anisa Kamel scored for the Blue Devils (9-1-3, 6-0-1 Central) as they failed to register a win in their division for the first time this season.
Kamel’s goal came 90 seconds into the game on an assist from Missy Maiewski.
Mary Greco made zero saves for Northampton.
Amherst Regional 2, Westfield 2 — Nick Johnson and Eric Gooden gave the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead with one goal each, but they had to settle for a draw on the road.
Brandon Vazquez and Mike Rock were credited with assists.
Curtis Barnes made six saves for Amherst (6-2-3).
Granby 2, Putnam 1 — The Rams (5-3-4) scored twice in the final seven minutes of regulation to come away with a thrilling home win.
Zach Funk tied the game, then DJ Menard put in the game winner with under two minutes to play. Devin Bergeron assisted on both tallies.
Brett Sullivan made four saves in goal for Granby.
Gateway Regional 3, St. Mary 0 — Six different players registered a point apiece for the Gators (6-3-3) in the victory in Westfield.
Justin Edinger, Calvin Dowers and Zach Mackechnie each scored a goal. Curtis Dowers, Josh Baillargeon and Jake Merritt had one assist apiece.
Mike Arel made three saves to pick up the shutout.
Cathedral 4, Northampton 3 — Casey Intrator scored two goals as the Blue Devils (2-6-3) fell on the road.
Intrator scored his goals in the first half, and Northampton led 3-1 after the break.
Elliot Weiss put in a goal and an assist, and Louie Jacob added an assist.
Jack Haller made six saves for the Blue Devils.
Hopkins Academy 5, Holyoke Catholic 0 — Tyler Szymkowicz posted a hat trick and added an assist as the Golden Hawks (10-1-1, 4-0 McGrath South) were victorious at home.
Tim Knightly and Paul Delamy each had a goal and an assist for Hopkins, while Chad Sanderson and John Martinez assisted once apiece.
Ben Pitta earned the shutout with four saves. Tom Heavren made 11 stops for the Gaels (5-4-3, 1-3-1).
South Hadley 3, Central 2 — The Tigers (8-3) rallied to take the final two games in a 27-25, 20-25, 20-25, 25-18, 15-10 road victory that moves them to within a win of qualifying for postseason.
Sarah LaRochelle had eight aces and six blocks in the win. Shanel de los Santos had four aces and four kills.
Maddie Kelleher led an outstanding defensive effort with five of the team’s 26 digs. She also had three of their 16 blocks.
Easthampton 3, Renaissance 0 — Rachena Nhem recorded four kills, eight assists and four aces as the Eagles (11-2) won 25-14, 25-16, 25-19 on the road.
Elizabeth Whitney tallied three kills and three aces, and Hajar Akanour blasted two kills.
Frontier 3, Mohawk 0 — The Red Hawks (12-1) cruised to a victory on the road thanks to a strong start in the first two sets.
Frontier claimed the first two sets 25-10 and 25-9, respectively, then closed the match with a 25-20 win.
Ali Durant (six aces, two digs), Haley Daroczyn (six assists, two aces) and Kate Harper (five kills) starred for Frontier.
