Judge candidate Brown by company he keeps

To the editor:

There was a time when the Republican party in Massachusetts, and in this country, offered us attractive and capable candidates, brilliant leaders like Silvio Conte, William Weld and Edward Brooke, to name a few.

Mitt Romney never came close, and neither does Scott Brown. Times have changed. The moderate Republicans like Olympia Snowe and Susan Cohen, those independent voices, are giving up. There are shouted down in the tea party rampage. They have been run out of government.

Scott Brown would have us believe that he is a peacemaker, a bridge builder. But he owes his political soul and future to the right. There is no moderate Republican soul in the Congress any more, and voting for Brown will not get you one. It will only reinforce the tragic untruths that make up the Republican agenda. If you have the interests of jobs, the environment, education, world leadership, energy conservation and a sound future at heart, you cannot vote for Brown, because, in the end, he cannot, and will not, no matter what he says, vote your views or create a bipartisan atmosphere.

Even if he were to try, he would be shouted down.

The recent war-whooping of his supporters at a rally, deriding Elizabeth Warren’s ethnic heritage, set a new low point in indignity and stupidity. How can he tolerate such racism? It’s simple — he promotes it.

Look at the debate text. It is only one step removed from the peanut hurlers at the Republican convention, who told the CNN African-American camera woman “This is how we feed our animals.”

Judge Brown by his actions and the company he keeps, reject him mightily, and vote for Warren for U.S. Senate.
