The Easthampton Prevention Task Force sponsors a town hall meeting on curbing teen drug abuse and drinking
A town hall-style meeting on curbing underage drinking and marijuana use will be held Thursday at Easthampton High School, featuring a panel of local law enforcement officials and high school peer leaders.
The event, sponsored by the Easthampton Prevention Task Force, begins with a free supper at 5 p.m. at the high school on Williston Avenue, followed by a group discussion.
Panelists will include Assistant District Attorney Yvonne Pesce, who will discuss social host laws that hold adults liable for injuries caused by teens drinking in their homes; Easthampton School Resource Officer Alan Schadel, who will talk about efforts to keep bars and restaurants from serving alcohol to teens; EHS students who are members of Students Against Destructive Decisions, who will talk about peer pressure; and Meg Kroeplin, a licensed social worker, who will give parents tips for supporting their teens.
Last year, 14 percent of eighth-graders surveyed in Hampshire County reported using alcohol in the past month and almost 40 percent of high school students said they had used marijuana by their senior year, according to the coalition.
Door prizes will be given to the first 50 people to arrive before 5:30 p.m. The high school’s Open House will be held directly after the meeting.
