Deborah Lee Leonard: Fort River, Amherst, principal Monica Hall’s track record on diversity

To the editor:

Like many parents in Amherst, I value diversity in the students, staff and faculty of the Amherst public school district. While I appreciate Superintendent Maria Geryk’s intention to hire a person who “supports hiring, recruitment and retention of staff of color,” I believe it is essential that the person hired to perform this valuable role is in fact able to be effective in this capacity.

It therefore seems important for the community to know that during the last two years of Principal Monica Hall’s tenure at Fort River, all of the teachers of color except one have left the school and of the newly hired teachers, none appear to be of color.

This letter seems mean-spirited to me. Vague implications.

Deborah, what did Ms. Hall do in the Georgia public schools, and for how long, before she became principal at Fort River for two years? That would seem important for the community to know as well.
