Terry Sprecker: I-91 signs failed to serve alert purpose

To the editor:

Seriously? All those supercilious, distracting, flashing roadsigns on the highway: “Use left lane only for passing” “Register to vote.”

The Department of Transportation couldn’t use a few of those signs to warn people of a coming traffic jam?

I was traveling south on I-91 at 12:25 p.m. Friday. Traffic was in “park” on the north lanes from Exit 17 to just short of Exit 18 ... and people were still lining up and getting on the highway. No one was exiting to avoid the logjam that an “emergency” crack in the pavement had created.

What is wrong with our system? Was Gov. Christie behind this, or is Mass. DOT living under a rock?

I am incredulous. Four years of working on the East Street in Easthampton just one-tenth of a mile south of the Island Road bridge and “all of a sudden” there was an emergency that required shutting down the highway?

Unbelievable!

Those signs are a high tech benefit for us. When it comes to the jam, somebody made an error. Let's get on with life.
