Job title and company: Co-manager, Amherst Dog Wash, 321 Main St., Amherst

Age: 23

Your duties: Working with an amazing team that includes two other co-managers, Rae Griffiths and Lee Ann Faria. We wash and dry dogs, help customers bathe their own dogs, do nail trims, schedule appointments and participate in community outreach.

How did you land your job? As one of the owners, I’ve been involved since the beginning.

What’s most challenging about your work? Every dog is different and has different needs. The first time meeting a dog can be challenging, especially if the dog isn’t fond of baths or nail trims. Treats help a lot, though.

What do you like about your job? I love being around the dogs and their owners, listening to their stories about life with their dogs. I learn something from each one.

What is your key to success? We are a team of animal professionals with years of experience and diverse skills between us. That, coupled with our love of dogs and desire to make them and their owners comfortable in our shop, allows us to offer great customer service.

How do you feel the Valley economy will fare this year? The strong sense of community in the Valley is key to the success of small, local businesses. We support other local businesses in the products that we offer in the shop, and we believe our customers appreciate that commitment and value the unique business we have.

Why did you choose to do business in the Valley? We live, play and exercise our dogs here, so it was the obvious place to base our business. We believe the Valley is full of conscientious people and that mindset extends to their pets, so giving this community a place to care for their canine family members seemed like a perfect fit.

Who has helped mentor you professionally? I’ve studied small-animal massage from Bancroft School of Massage Therapy, and T-touch, a method of massage based on circular movements of the fingers and hands on the body, and massage under Leea Foran, a professional dog trainer, at her Lenox-based facility For Animals. I’ve also had the pleasure of working with some great veterinarians in Vermont and the Berkshires.

Name a few of your goals for the coming year: We’re excited about continuing to grow our business and participating in more area activities. In addition to our current efforts, such as service dog discounts, student/faculty discounts, free first bath for shelter dogs and supporting Dakin Pioneer Valley Humane Society, we are looking forward to fundraisers, sponsoring mini-training sessions with experienced trainers, and coordinating neighborhood dog walks.

Tell us a little-known fact about you: In addition to the dog wash, I also work as an artisan bread baker.

What is your advice for others seeking business success? Be involved in the community and support other local businesses. Supporting each other will help us all grow and prosper. Make a special effort to get to know your customers and never underestimate the impact of good customer service.
