Piano recital  offers range  of performers

The performers range in age from 8 to 76 and are piano students of Jeff Olmsted of Northampton, who teaches with a piano method called Simply Music, which allows students to start playing and composing before learning to read music. The event is free and open to the public.

Phoebe Lloyd, 11, will accompany herself singing her song “Just Like Rules.” Louie Vaget, 8, will perform “Lasso Cowboy In A Salmon Suit.” Will Schmalz, 11, will play his “Oom-Pah Blues,” and Asha Kulp, 8, will play “Thunderstorm.” All are from Northampton or Hatfield.

Also playing will be Marj Tauer, 76, of Easthampton. She is working on a piece called “Spring Dance.” Olmsted said Tauer became enthusiastic about Simply Music when she discovered she could play old favorites from a book of Christmas carols. Simply Music was founded by Australian educator Neil Moore.

Most of Olmsted’s students are in classes with two to five students. Olmsted grew up in Northampton and spent most of his adult life as a professional musician in and around New York City. Olmsted is the choir director at the Haydenville Congregational Church and the director of the Wise Guys, a men’s a cappella group.
