Weekend planner: Music
Mak’hela: The Jewish Chorus of Western Massachusetts performs many kinds of music with Jewish connections, from the madrigals of the Italian-Jewish Baroque composer Salamone Rossi to Yiddish folk songs. On Sunday the 50-voice ensemble will take the stage at the Academy of Music in Northampton with guest vocalist Evelyn Harris for “Let My People Go: Songs of Freedom,” a concert of selections from the classical, folk, pop and gospel songbooks expressing the yearning for freedom and redemption. In addition to Hebrew and Yiddish, the chorus will sing in Ladino, Italian and English in a program whose diverse group of composers includes Giuseppe Verdi, contemporary Israeli composer Michael Wolpe, Sephardic folksinger Flory Jagoda and the Valley’s own noted songmeister, Clifton J. Noble Jr.
4 p.m. $15 general; $10 seniors and students. www.academyofmusictheatre.com
