I had just finished shooting a picture at the Hotel Northampton when I spotted Alan Houghton across the street, putting lettering up on the marquee at the Calvin Theatre. He is a familiar — one could even say distinctive — sight around town, with his long white beard and busy gait. When I asked if I could photograph him he was happy to oblige, but then he quickly moved his ladder; with no chance to look through the camera’s lens, I shot this frame. I decided to stay, and kept shooting for another half hour, but this is one of my favorites. I love the lines, angles and shapes of this photo, as well as the feeling of work it conveys. Most of all, I enjoyed chatting with Houghton. It was one of those times when I left feeling I had a tiny bit more understanding about a familiar face.
