Kathleen Mellen’s best bets

Lively art

I love the idea of an arts salon; it sounds so sophisticated. After a yearlong hiatus, the Hillside Salon, an event that gives artists a forum for their work, has been revived. Founded by Sabina Holub, wife of then-University of Massachusetts chancellor, Robert Holub, the salon was suspended in 2012. On Thursday at 7 p.m., at the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art, ceramic sculptor Sergei Isupov, illustrator Barry Moser, publisher Guy Pettit and printmaker Annie Bisset will make presentations; discussions will follow. $5 suggested donation. valleyartsalon.blogspot.com

ANOTHER GOOD BET

The “Hands All Around” quilt show, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the UMass Campus Center, features World War II quilts, as well as modern ones that qualify as contemporary art. $8; $2 ages 6 to 12 (5 and under free); $4 students, military. handsacrossthevalley.org/quilt-show/
