Photo gallery: A bygone era

I have been to the Summit House high atop Mount Holyoke in Hadley many times, and every time I visit I wonder what it was like there during the 19th century, when it was a luxurious hotel. As I walked around the decks recently, with the wind blowing and the snow falling, I imagined men in fancy clothes, canes, hats and gloves, and women in long dresses, laughing, dancing on the decks. As on other visits, I thought to somehow capture these impressions, but know, of course, that it’s like trying to photograph a ghost, who lived in a time that has long since disappeared.
