ID: Burns Maxey

Artist and performer Burns Maxey arrived in New England at age 18 to attend college. She later lived in San Francisco and New Orleans before settling in this area, where she now helps promote the Easthampton arts scene.

Full name: Burns Maxey

Date and place of birth: May 13, 1975; Jackson, Miss.

Address: Easthampton

Job: Easthampton City Arts+ coordinator

Who lives under the same roof as you? Some vinyl, a cat and a musician

Education: Bard College, Rhode Island School of Design

Pets: Major Tom, the famous flying dog-cat

Hobbies: Gardening and biking

Book you’d recommend to a friend: That’s really difficult. As an unlikely city employee I think I would recommend “The Overcoat and Other Short Stories,” by Nikolai Gogol (particularly “The Nose”)

Favorite movie: “Enter the Dragon,” with Bruce Lee

Five items you can’t live without: Art, music, love, books and hot tea

Last thing you purchased just for fun: The slickest shoes in town

What’s at the top of your bucket list? Really learn to play drums

Life-changing experience: Moving to Easthampton

Strangest job you ever held: Unofficial snake handler assistant for a zoo in Mississippi. I also cleaned the pennies from the zoo’s wishing well

Current Facebook status: Snow makes it much easier to move bins of water balloons

A little-known fact about you: Although I have more than lost the accent, occasionally a Southern dialect appears with a few spoken words such as mint julep, July, and pen/pin

Dumbest thing you ever did: I swam into a jellyfish bed

One product, trend or fashion you’d like to see return: Government and communities funding more art

What really sets you off? Prejudice, whining, egotism and negativity

If you could spend the day with a celebrity, from any time in history, who would it be and why? Harvey Milk. He spoke his heart and was an inspiring civic leader, speaker and person who transformed his own life, which was ended much too soon

Favorite place to get a bite and why? My kitchen. My cooking is tasty (but don’t go spreading that around)

What does your ideal weekend look like? Biking on beautiful days on a bike trail, finding something new, taking pictures, good conversations and living in the moment

One thing you would change about yourself: Start the day afresh as a natural early riser

What gives you the creeps and why? Overly personal sharing on social media and our diaristic culture in general. (The irony is not lost on me as I complete this ID)

People who knew you in high school thought you were: Artsy

Whom do you most admire? All people who continue to selflessly strive for equality, justice and human rights

Parting shot: Give all people a chance and respect at first meeting because everyone deserves a fair shot — and you never know who you might be sitting next to on a sinking boat
