Suzanne Wilson’s Best Bets

The sad, inglorious history of struggles between Native Americans and U.S. settlers and soldiers remain unknown to most of us: “Dakota 38,” a documentary about the Sioux uprising of 1862 and the mass execution that followed, tells one of those chapters. The film will be shown Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. at the Media Education Foundation, 60 Masonic St., Northampton. Free; 585-9314.

The folks at the Hitchcock Center for the Environment in Amherst are out with “Earth Matters: Essays on the Nature of the Pioneer Valley,” a collection of columns that have appeared on the Gazette’s Outdoors page. They cover a range of topics and are written in a style that makes them accessible to the most committed couch potato. Available at the center at 525 South Pleasant St., at Collective Copies in Amherst and Florence, at local bookstores and at levellerspress.com.
