Steve Pfarrer’s best bets

LOCAL ROOTS

Josh Ritter has become such a big name in the singer/songwriter world that it might be forgotten his first main album, “Golden Age of Radio,” was released by the local label Signature Sounds over 10 years ago. Ritter has since gone on to win accolades for his songs, and he also wrote an acclaimed novel, “Bright’s Passage,” in 2011. He plays the Calvin Theater in Northampton Thursday at 8:30 p.m. with his band. The Felice Brothers open. Tickets at 586-8686.

ANOTHER GOOD BET

Looking for something new to read? Of course you are. And one place to find it — though the books themselves are used — is at the Amherst League of Women Voters 65th annual book sale, which takes place this weekend on the Amherst Town Common. Friday to Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., rain or shine.
