Pleasant Street, Northampton. KEVIN GUTTING

... as do punctuation and spacing. I don’t know if this sign was written and posted in earnest or perhaps the handwriting was carefully added by a sly and impatient coffee fan who frequents this section of Pleasant Street in Northampton, home to a popular coffee shop. While the building’s facade has been undergoing an extensive face-lift, all the businesses, impressively, have remained open. The sign reminds me of the morphing of the yellow diamond-shaped “caution” signs of my childhood which read “SLOW” in large block letters sandwiched between the words “Children” and “Playing” in appreciably smaller type. Over the years, the graphic impact was lost on some sign makers who homogenized the type sizes so they now simply read “Children Slow Playing” or, even worse, “Slow Children Playing.”
