Wednesday’s colleges: UMass stops URI in 68-67 women’s basketball win

Ryan Holder’s steal with a second left sealed a 68-67 win for the UMass women’s basketball team over Rhode Island Wednesday at the Mullins Center.

Hailey Leidel scored a career-high 27 points, including four points that gave the Minutewomen (7-9, 1-2 Atlantic 10) a lead late in the fourth quarter.

Maddie Mulligan scored 18 points with 10 assists, while Alyx Stiff added 14.

Leah McDerment led UMass with nine assists.

Smith College 95, Mount Holyoke 30 — Kennedy Guest-Pritchett scored 19 points the Pioneers’ road win over the Lyons.

Guest-Pritchett shot 8-for-10 from the floor for Smith College (9-3, 2-2 NEWMAC).

Xajaah Williams-Flores led Mount Holyoke (2-8, 0-4 NEWMAC) with 13 points and five rebounds.

Men’s basketball

Westfield State 88, Fitchburg 81 — Jose Allen (Amherst) had 21 points as the Owls (4-8, 1-0 MASCAC) won at home.
