The following author appearances, readings and book events are planned for the coming week in the Valley:

AMHERST BOOKS: Kim Yi Dionne, author of “Doomed Interventions: The Failure of Global Responses to AIDS in Africa,” reads from her work Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the bookshop, at 8 Main St., Amherst. 256-1547

THE BASEMENT: Richard Wayne Horton is the featured speaker on Writers Night Out, Tuesday ay 7 p.m. Submit your name to read for 5 minutes until 7:10. Free, at the tavern, 21 Center Street, Northampton.

BOOKLINK BOOKSELLERS: A book launch party for “The Pencil Bandits” series by Henry Reade takes place Saturday from 6:30-8 p.m. Attendees will be able to create a story from scratch that will then be performed as part of improv theater. EMILY DICKINSON MUSEUM:  Arts Night Out in Emily Dickinson’s garden features poet Dina Stander Thursday at 6:45 p.m. and the band Official Old Flame at 7:15 p.m. Open mic at 6 p.m., signups at 5 p.m. Free, at the museum, 280 Main St, Amherst. (508) 951-8538.

SMITH COLLEGE: Afaa Michael Weaver reads from his poetry Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Alumnae House, 33 Elm St., at the college in Northampton. 585-2190

THE YIDDISH BOOK CENTER: Ezra Glinter offers “Have I Got a Story for You: More Than a Century of Fiction from the Forward," a discussion about the Jewish newspaper, on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the center, 1021 West St., Amherst. 256-4900
