Tuesday’s high school sports: Meikkel Murray finishes strong for Amherst basketball

Meikkel Murray was at it again for the Amherst Regional boys basketball team.

After a slow start in the first half for the Hurricanes, Murray scored nine of his 24 points in the third quarter in a 62-57 win at Longmeadow on Tuesday.

The points mostly came on putbacks, as Murray finished with 15 rebounds.

Meikyle Murray added 10 points while Seth Bella-Hunter contributed nine points and five blocks for Amherst (3-0).

Hampshire 49, Hoosac Valley 43 — David Helems scored 12 points, while Matt Babyak and Jacob Bihler each had 11, as the Raiders (1-1) won on the road.

Granby 70, St. Joe’s 49 — Zach Gorham led the Rams to their first win with 21 points and 10 rebounds at home.

Joe Desormier had eight assists and five steals to go along with his three points.

Noah Bleakley scored 15, While Joe Bessette had 11 points and two 3-pointers for Granby (1-1).

Mahar 67, Belchertown 35 — Mike Laughner scored six points in a home loss for the Orioles (0-2).

Smith Academy 45, Westfield Tech 33 — Jerry Zigmont scored 22 points with 11 made free throws to help the Falcons win their season opener.

Matt Bouley had seven points for Smith Academy (1-0).

Girls basketball

Smith Academy 39, Hampden Charter 16 — Olivia Cavanaugh made two 3-pointers and scored 10 points in a road win.

Emma Kelly added 10 points and six rebounds for the Falcons (1-0). Karlie Guimond scored five points and had five steals.

Hopkins Academy 60, Franklin Tech 15 — The Golden Hawks’ defense was too much for Franklin Tech in a home win.

Samantha Jenks was all over the court for Hopkins (2-0), scoring 22 points with six steals, seven blocks and five assists.

Jenks went for five 3-pointers as well in the game. Allison Kowal-Safron added 10 points for Hopkins.

Belchertown 71, Palmer 24 — Jenna Birks netted four 3-pointers for a career-high 12 points in the road win for the Orioles (2-0).

Kayla Henry continued her strong start on offense with 29 points with six rebounds and eight steals.

Cara McKenzie just missed a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds with five blocks.

Easthampton 50, Pope Francis 45 — Andi Hall scored 10 points, as the Eagles opened their season with a road win.

Karina Volpe and Lily Pioli added nine, while Juli Korza scored seven for Easthampton (1-0).

South Hadley 63, Commerce 16 — Sophie Gatzounas scored 18 points in the Tigers season-opening win.

Mia Kelly added nine points, while Mikhaila Edge scored eight for South Hadley (1-0).

Ice hockey

West Springfield 3, South Hadley 0 — The Terriers held the Tigers scoreless in South Hadley.

Jake Remillard made 23 saves for South Hadley (1-1).
