Pedestrian killed by vehicle in Hadley on Saturday ID’d as Melvin Wilson, 33

HADLEY — Melvin L. Wilson, 33, of Sunderland, is identified as the pedestrian killed after being struck by a vehicle on the Route 116 bypass early Saturday morning, according to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.

Wilson was hit by a car traveling south, toward Route 9, as he was walking along the edge of the divided highway, said Laurie Losel, spokeswoman for the district attorney’s office.

Hadley Police, State Police attached to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office and Emergency Services personnel responded to the scene after the driver of the vehicle, a 29-year-old Deerfield woman, called 911 following the collision.

When police and fire department arrived on scene, they discovered that Wilson was unresponsive and responders immediately began medical care. Wilson was then transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, where he later died.

Signs at the Meadow Street intersection in Amherst and along Route 9 in Hadley state that pedestrians, bicyclists and those riding horses are not allowed on the road.

The crash remains under investigation by Hadley Police, State Police attached to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, State Troopers assigned to the Crime Scene Services Collision Analysis and Collision Analysis and Reconstruction sections, and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
