Explains support for Jo Comerford

When Jo Comerford decided to run as a write-in candidate for state Senate after Sen. Stanley Rosenberg resigned, I knew instantly that my summer had happily turned upside down.

Comerford is the candidate of all (quite wonderful) candidates: a woman with extraordinary experience, vision and commitment who can lead us into the next generation of powerful western Massachusetts representation on Beacon Hill. What an opportunity.

Since arriving in Northampton over 20 years ago, Comerford’s career has been defined by leadership on a local, state and national level, first as director of the western Massachusetts American Friends Service Committee to program director for The Food Bank of Western Massachusetts to executive director of National Priorities Project to campaign director for MoveOn.

Comerford’s record of success at each stop is too long to recount here (go to http://jocomerford.org to read more) but there is one theme that unites them all: she knows how to bring people together and make change.

As a former Northampton city councilor and as director of the Western Massachusetts Network to End Homelessness where I have worked closely with our great legislative delegation, I know Comerford will make both a tremendous colleague and leader at the Statehouse. I know our region’s shared interests will have the most effective voice under her stewardship.

Comerford will put all her hard-earned skills to the test to bring us more funding for public education, single-payer health care, more environmental protections, east-west rail and so many other critical issues that impact our quality of life. She will do it with her rare combination of grace and tenacity that has won her such universal respect across the region.

A write-in candidate is by definition an uphill battle. And it’s entirely winnable if we do it together. On Sept. 4, we’ll be at the polls with a sticker or you can write it in yourself: Jo Comerford for state Senate.
