High schools: Amherst holds off Northampton in boys ultimate action (PHOTOS)

Tyler Feeney accounted for four points with two goals and two assists, as the Amherst Regional boys ultimate team defeated Northampton 14-6 at Kiwanis Field in Amherst on Tuesday.

The Hurricanes, No. 2 in Ultiworld’s high school power rankings, traded goals with the Blue Devils initially before finishing with a four-goal flurry to take an 8-4 lead into halftime.

Amherst’s Armando Feldman added two assists and a goal, while Walker Goeckel scored twice and had two assists. Aidan Martin-Weinbaum and Ben Haugsjaahabink found the end zone twice for the Hurricanes. Taylor Hanson and Drew Leutz each threw two goals, while James Owen threw a goal and scored one himself for Amherst.

Northampton’s Roan Dunkerly scored three times and added an assist, and Max Gledhill threw three assists. Zach Guswa had a goal and an assist for the Blue Devils.

Girls ultimate

Northampton 11, Four Rivers 7 – Tatum Hathaway netted three goals, as the Blue Devils held off Four Rivers, 11-7, on Tuesday at JFK Middle School.

Dahlia Breslow (2), Nola Busansky (2) and Olive Polson-Filas (2) also tallied, while assists were distributed by Polson-Filas (3), Lila Nields-Duffy (2) and  Hathaway (2). Blocks were credited to Ciana Cunningham, Busansky, Ava Madden and Haliyah Friedman-Kassis.

Baseball

Smith Academy 3, Mahar 2 – Harry LaFlamme tossed all seven innings, and visiting Smith Academy rallied from a 2-0 deficit with three runs in the top of the seventh to snag a victory on Tuesday in Orange.

Trailing 2-0 in the seventh, Josh Gingras doubled, LaFlamme worked a walk on a full count and pinch runner Jake Wilcox stole second base to put runners at second and third with one out. Robert Slysz doubled to tie the game, and Garrett Willard followed with another double to drive in the go-ahead and eventual game-winning run.

LaFlamme made it stand up with a scoreless bottom of the seventh, and he struck out three in a complete-game outing with five hits and four walks allowed.

At the plate, Cam Graves, Willard and Gingras finished with two hits apiece.

Chicopee Comp 11, Amherst 1 – Matt Vassallo had an RBI double and a single for the Hurricanes in a home loss.

Amherst’s Neil Cunniffe (HBP) and Arich Rubenstein singled, while Chuck May walked and scored a run. Hurricanes leadoff Spencer Waite walked twice.

Softball

Hampshire 14, West Springfield 0 - Joss Mettey tossed 11 strikeouts and allowed five hits in a shutout win over West Springfield. The Raiders are still undefeated this season with a 4-0 record. 

CC Thayer blasted a two-run homer for the Raiders and added a single and three RBIs. Teaghan Charles hit a solo home run and went 3-for-4 at the plate.

Easthampton 18, Northampton 0 (5) – Abigail McClaflin drilled a home run as part of a 5-for-5 afternoon, driving in four runs and touching home five times to help Easthampton to a lopsided win on Tuesday.

Ana Growhowski was 4-for-5 for the Eagles, while Jess Cloutier was 4-for-4 with three doubles and four RBIs. Lauren Morse (two hits, four RBIs) and Kayley Downie (three hits) also keyed an offense that racked up 21 hits. Sophia Faginski struck out three and allowed three hits in a five-inning shutout.

Northampton’s Kaliya Valentin had a hit at the plate and struck out six in the circle.

Boys lacrosse

Northampton 7, Chicopee Comp 6 – Jack Carpenter potted the game-winning goal with just 12 seconds remaining, lifting the Blue Devils to their first victory of the season in thrilling fashion.

Northampton (1-3) trailed 6-5 late before Liam Parr tied the game with just over a minute remaining. That set the stage for Carpenter, who intercepted a pass from the Comp goalie and buried it for the winner.

Henry Fallon made 13 saves in net for Northampton, which received two goals from Carpenter. Minty Paterson, Keller Mahoney, Jackson Oravec and Mykal Norris were the other goal scorers in addition to Parr’s equalizer.

Wahconah 13, Amherst 6 – Skyler Ferro contributed to every Hurricanes tally with four goals and two assists in a road loss.

Linus Hazen added another two goals and two assists for Amherst.

Amherst goalie Max Frenette saved 17 shots.

Pope Francis 12, South Hadley 5 – Belchertown native Zach Buffone had an assist for the Cardinals.

Girls lacrosse

Lee 6, Amherst 5 (OT) – Amherst and Lee needed overtime to settle Tuesday’s tilt, but the Hurricanes couldn’t secure the win in extra time. 

The two teams went into halftime tied 5-5, and neither team found the back of the net for the rest of regulation. 

Amherst goalie Cedar Conrad made 10 stops while Francesca Sloan scored two goals and an assist. Also getting on the scoreboard for Amherst was Talia Sadiq (2G), Kiko Bhowmik (1G) and April Schilling (1A).

West Springfield 10, Northampton 7 – Riley Shea made seven saves in the Northampton net during Tuesday night’s loss to the Terriers.

Chloe Denhart tallied four goals to pace the Blue Devils, while Eloise Ruberti netted a pair and Teagan McDonald also scored.

Boys tennis

Amherst 4, Central 1 – Miles Jeffries cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles as the Hurricanes improved to 3-1 on the season.

Woojin Kwon (6-2, 6-0) and Brock Waldman (6-4, 6-1) also scored singles wins for Amherst, while the No. 1 doubles team of Rory Hartblay and Oliver Hansell notched a 6-1, 6-2 victory.

PVCICS 4, SICS 1 – Hugo Shinn and Clayton English cruised in singles matches as the Dragons handled Springfield International on Tuesday.

Shinn (6-0, 6-0) and English (6-1, 6-0) scored wins at first and second singles, respectively. The first doubles pairing of James and Teddy Scott swept a 6-0, 6-0 decision, and the second doubles team of Asa Taggert and Gabe Loiunaz notched a 6-0, 6-1 win.

Boys volleyball

Chicopee Comp 3, Belchertown 1 – Connor White (17 kills) and Gabriel Ibekilo (12) paced the offense, but the Orioles dropped a four-set affair on Tuesday.

Rainer Kristensen dished out 22 assists for Belchertown, while White notched seven blocks to pace the defensive effort.
