AMHERST — Popularity of recent tours giving the public peeks into all areas of the Jones Library, including some places set aside only for staff, is prompting the Jones Library Capital Campaign to continue the initiative through mid-April.

More than 50 people in March toured the original 1928 Jones Library building and its 1990s addition, getting a glimpse of all sections of the library and learning more about its operations. The tours come in advance of work commencing on the $46.1 million expansion and renovation project at the 43 Amity St. site.

Bids for the project are due in mid-April, with the work to be complete by late 2025. The project included demolishing the 1990s addition and renovating parts of the historic interior.

Campaign manager Ginny Hamilton said the latest tours will be offered by Jones Library Capital Campaign co-chairs Kent W. Faerber and Lee Edwards, who is also a trustee.

Among those who have attended are a longtime library volunteer, participants in the library’s English as a Second Language Program’s Conversation Circles and new residents. Hamilton said they offered varied reasons for their interest, including seeing hidden areas, learning more about the history of the building and to better understand the need for the project.

The next tours are Saturday at 2 p.m., April 6 at 11 a.m., April 7 at 2 p.m., April 10 at 10 a.m. and April 13 at 10 a.m.

All tours begin by the main stairwell on the first floor and last about an hour. No registration is required.
