SOUTH HADLEY — A Springfield man faces drug charges after police arrested him and allegedly seized more than 2 kilos of cocaine along with two illegally purchased firearms.

Jarrell Smith, 28, was taken into custody Friday on Haig Avenue in South Hadley and was later arraigned in Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown on charges of trafficking cocaine and conspiracy to violate drug laws, State Police said.

The arrest followed the execution of three search warrants at locations in Springfield and South Hadley as a result of an investigation by the West Division of the Massachusetts State Police Commonwealth Interstate Narcotics Reduction Enforcement Team (CINRET) and federal Homeland Security Investigations.

Police said the operation resulted in the seizure of two bricks of cocaine with a total weight of approximately 2,070 grams.

A search of Smith’s Springfield residence resulted in the seizure of approximately 160 more grams of suspected cocaine and two illegally possessed handguns, one of which held a fully loaded 30-round extended magazine and was equipped with a laser sight, police said.

Further charges will be sought for the additional cocaine and the firearms. Charges may also be sought against a South Hadley resident in connection with this investigation.

South Hadley and Springfield police, along with members of the Hampshire/Franklin County Narcotic Task Force, the Drug Enforcement Administration’s Springfield office, and three other State Police units assisted in the joint operation.
