High schools: Belchertown girls tennis holds off Dedham in Div. 3 state tourney

Belchertown’s No. 2 doubles team of Mia Corish and Emalee Chaisson won a crucial second set in their match (6-3, 7-5) to send the Orioles to the next round of the MIAA Division 3 girls tennis tournament with a close 3-2 victory over No. 29 Dedham.

Also winning for Belchertown was No. 1 singles player Ava Shea (6-4, 6-1) and No. 3 singles player Anna Stamp (6-1, 6-3). 

The No. 4 Orioles will face either No. 13 North Reading or No. 20 Boston Latin Academy in the Round of 16. Those teams meet on Thursday.

Div. 4 prelim

No. 29 South Hadley 3, No. 36 Leicester 2 – The Tigers’ No. 2 doubles team of Grace O’Shea and Sarah Cormier secured a preliminary round win with a 7-6 (7-2), 6-3 victory over Libby Gallagher and Liz Sosa.

South Hadley’s Yanna Stefaglo defeated Laylah Summers 6-4, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. At No. 3 singles, Estella Estrada captured a 6-1, 6-0 win over Gia Norcia.

The Tigers will travel to No. 4 Saint John Paul II in the Round of 32.

No. 30 Medford 3, No. 35 Amherst 2 –  No. 1 singles Miles Jeffries outlasted Vishal Romero 6-2, 6-4 and Elias Katsaros bested Andrew Soule in No. 3 singles 6-0, 6-1 but Amherst dropped a tight 3-2 decision on the road at No. 30 Medford on Wednesday.

The Hurricanes finished their season 8-7 overall. Medford will play at No. 3 Concord-Carlisle in the Round of 32 on Friday.

Boys volleyball

Div. 2 Round of 32

No. 10 Leominster 3, No. 23 Granby 1 – The Rams ended their second season as a program with a 25-17, 25-15, 22-25, 25-22 loss in Central Massachusetts.

Granby finished 13-7 overall. Leominster will play either Greater New Bedford or Billerica in the Round of 16.
