Beth Girsham: Calling drag misogyny ‘misguided’

In response to J.M. Sorrell’s opinion piece [“Misogyny as entertainment and entitlement,” Gazette, May 3], I moved to the Valley in 1973, and participated in the “rich and unique history,” as one of many proud feminist activists in the area. As a feminist, I support individual gender self expressions and civil rights. Calling drag misogyny seems, at best, misguided, at worst, hateful. I see drag, both queens and kings, as one way to subvert the dominant patriarchy and rigid gender roles. Sorrell’s conflation of drag with trans participation in sports is both confusing and inappropriate.
