High schools: Amherst girls cross country run past Longmeadow

In a highly contested dual meet between the Amherst and Longmeadow girls cross country teams, the ‘Canes ran away with a resounding victory on Tuesday.

Longmeadow’s Ada Grant ran the fastest time of the afternoon (21:27), but the next three runners were from Amherst, led by Elizabeth Sawicki’s time of 21:55 for second place. Isla Cusick placed third (22:45) and Eliza Zimmerman ran 23:12 for fourth, 40 seconds faster than her time last week, and Amherst captured a 22-37 victory.

Felix Goeckel (23:34) and Willa Hudson (23:40) also scored for the Hurricanes. 

Minnechaug 21, Belchertown 40 – Kami Wlodyka ran a 20:33 to finish second overall at the Orioles dual meet against Minnechaug. 

Also cracking the top five for the Orioles was Cameron Ting, who placed fifth in 23:24, over a minute faster than her last race.

Easthampton 23, HC West 35 –
  Easthampton’s top performer Gwen Banz finished second overall in a four-team meet on Tuesday.

Frontier 15, PVCICS 50 –
Frontier’s Leah Gump turned in the fastest time on Tuesday, running a 23:07 to take home first place. Behind her was teammates Sarah Dibartolomeo (24:03) and Liv Christensen (25:30).

PVCICS had strong times from Eunice Lo (26:30) and Sarah Fardal (27:28), while the top runners for Granby included Addison Hill at 25:27 and Quinlin Cook at 26:47.

Gateway 23, Southwick 33 – Anya Niles secured her eighth career win on Tuesday against Southwick, crossing the line in 24:31 in Gateway’s first meet of the year. 

Alex Zajko finished second overall in 27:16 and Sawyer Wilkinson also broke the 30 minute mark with a 29:47 for sixth place.

Hampshire 16, Westfield Tech 47 –
 Hampshire fell just shy of recording perfect scores against both Greenfield and Westfield Tech at Stanley Park in Westfield.

Keegan Butler crossed the line first for the Raiders in 22:42. Right behind her was Alexandra Henrichon (23:01), running in her first race for Hampshire after transferring from Gateway. Close behind Henrichon was Amelia Perry (23:18) and Natalie Dunlap (25:20). 

Boys cross country

Longmeadow 26, Amherst 29 – The last three times that the Lancers and the Hurricanes have met, the score has been the same – 26-29. Two years ago it went to Longmeadow and last year Amherst earned the victory. Longmeadow secured a tight win again in their most recent showdown in a dual meet that came down to the final mile on Tuesday. 

Amherst’s David Pinero-Jacome placed first with a 17:06 on the 5-kilometer course. Will Larson broke the 18 minute barrier to place fifth for Amherst (17:56) and Kyle Yanko nabbed sixth with an 18:22. Also scoring for the ‘Canes were Sam Woodruff (18:49) and Calvin Miller (18:49), who crossed the line side-by-side in eighth and ninth, respectively. 

Belchertown 23, Minnechaug 37 – The Orioles’ pack-running tactics secured them a convincing win over Minnechaug in a dual meet on Tuesday. 

Belchertown’s top runner was Nathan Fernandes, who crossed the line in second place with a 18:32. The Orioles top five runners all finished within 12 seconds of each other, with Liam Howard (18:33), Ben Les (18:35), Ty O’Donnell (18:41) and Derek Gould (18:44) all scoring for Belchertown.

Easthampton 20, Hampden East 42 –
 The Eagles had a successful outing at a four-team meet on Tuesday, earning wins in three of their four matchups. 

Landon Ellsworth crossed the line first for Easthampton in eighth place, followed by Will Jourdain in ninth and Alex Major in 10th.

Frontier 25, PVCICS 30 —
 Evan Hedund set a new course record in a four-school meet on Monday, crossing the finish line in 18:59 to win the boys race. 

Nathan Hutchison set a new school record for Granby runners on the course with a 19:49 for second place.  

The Dragons’ top runner of the day was Grafton Tolop, who finished third in 20:09. He was followed by teammate Owen Bauman (21:16) in fourth. 

Frontier’s Charlie Dennis (21:40) and Amory Maxey (22:06) both scored for the Redhawks. Granby’s Nathan Benson (22:11) and Trevor Sullivan (22:54) were the next two fastest Granby runners.

Hampshire 20, Greenfield 43
Hampshire 15, Mahar 50 –
 Greenfield’s Jackson Caron outkicked Hampshire’s Oscar Schiff by just one second, but the Raiders stormed back with a dominating team win against Greenfield. 

Schiff posted an 18:11 for Hampshire, followed by a gaggle of teammates in Tim Cahill (18:31), Nicky Elias-Gilette (18:34). Nick Brisson (18:35) and Jack Laliberte (18:35), who all finished within four seconds of each other. 

Girls soccer

Palmer 7, Granby 3 – Kalli White scored a pair of goals and goalie Meredith Bartosz stopped 10 shots, but Palmer still managed to outscore the Rams in a high-scoring affair. 

Emily Tremblay scored Granby’s third goal and Sophia Gagnon and Kelly Lynne Kennedy both dished out helpers. The loss dropped Granby’s record to 0-3. 

Boys soccer

Frontier 4, South Hadley 0 — The Redhawks were able to avenge last year’s Div. 4 state semifinal loss to the Tigers last year, earning a shutout Moriarty League win on Tuesday.

Nico Fasulo opened the scoring in the 26th minute off an assist from Aiden Valderrama before Fasulo tallied an unassisted goal in the 38th minute to put Frontier ahead, 2-0 at the half. 

Rosco Palmer then scored off a dish from Fasulo in the 51st minute and Chanhee Son closed out the scoring with an unassisted tally in the 63rd minute. 

Owen Babb made two saves while Jack Cusson came on for the final 10 minutes to help preserve the shutout. 

Mount Everett 0, Granby 0 – Neither Granby or Mount Everett could find a crack in the other’s defenses, playing to a scoreless draw.

Granby goalie Daniel Santiago made one save while the Rams peppered Mount Everett with seven shots on goal in their first match of the season. 

Greenfield 3, Hopkins 1 – Liedson Fernandes Miranda scored the Golden Hawks’ lone goal against Greenfield. 

The loss drops Hopkins’ record to 0-1-1. 

Pioneer 0, Smith Academy 0 — Both the Panthers and Falcons couldn’t capitalize on their scoring chances as the game ended in a scoreless draw. Each team hit the crossbar on separate occasions.

Pioneer Valley goalie Ty Ellis (two saves) and Smith Academy goalie Jake Wilcox (five saves) each made crucial second-half saves to keep the game tied in what was an evenly-matched, well-contested contest.

Field hockey

 Amherst 3, Holyoke 1 – Three different goal scorers stepped up for the ‘Canes in their first game of the season to earn a win. 

Zoey Candito, Aria Haupt and Mia Shaw all scored for Amherst.

Frontier 0, Longmeadow 0 – The Redhawks played to a hard-fought draw against Longmeadow. The last time the two teams played, Longmeadow walked away with a 1-0 win. 

Frontier had five corner attempts but no shots on goal and keeper Kyra Richards made five stops to secure the tie. Frontier is still looking for its first win of the season with an 0-2-2 record. 

Franklin Tech 8, Hampshire 1 – Chloe Moynihan scored for the Raiders but the Hampshire defense couldn’t slow Franklin Tech on Tuesday. 

Golf

Belchertown 153, Frontier 163 – Frontier’s Ryan Cetto earned medalist honors with a 35, but all four of Belchertown’s scorers finished below 40 to secure a close win against the Redhawks. 

Henry Poissant shot the lowest round of the day for the Orioles (37), followed closely by teammates Christopher Wood (38), Michael Murray (39) and Cal Orzech (39). 

Frontier’s Cam Skiffington tied for fourth with a 39. Gabe Solodky (44) and Cade Allenby (46) also placed for the Redhawks. 

Hampshire 173, South Hadley 177 — The Tigers’ Ryan MacGregor and Red Raiders’ Cam Jarosz tied for the low round of the day, as each shot a 41 to pace their respective teams. Brayden Fennessy (Hampshire) and Matthew Blaser (South Hadley) tied for second, turning in a 42.

Hampshire squeaked out a tight match thanks to its third and fourth scorers Riley Florek and Pryden Messier each shooting a 45 to give them the edge over two 47s from the Tigers third and fourth golfers.

Girls volleyball

Belchertown 3, East Longmeadow 0 –  The Orioles improved to 2-0 on the season with a three-set win over East Longmeadow. 

Christina Santiago led the offense with 10 kills and added six digs on defense. Setter Vivian Ross finished with 15 assists, three aces and four digs, and Ava Shea posted six kills and two aces.

Chicopee 3, Easthampton 2 — The Eagles soared to a 25-12 first-set finish, but it was tough sledding after that. Easthampton dropped the second set 23-25 and won the third 26-24, before falling  in the fourth and fifth sets 19-25, 11-15, respectively. 

Kaelin Damon led Easthampton with 19 digs, eight kills, and three aces, while Kayley Downie (36 digs) and Addison Sigda (15 digs) combined for 51 digs. Erin Teague added 13 assists, five digs, and three kills in the Eagles’ loss.
