Sofia Holden recorded the 600th strikeout of her career, lifting the Amherst softball team to a convincing 15-3 win over Springfield Central on Thursday in Springfield.

The Hurricanes ace struck out 10 batters in total, allowing just three hits and one walk in a six-inning victory

Amherst scored four runs in the top of the first to set the tone. The visitors racked up 16 hits, led by three apiece from Nina Holden (two triples), Sofia Holden (two triples) and Luna Weiss. Bella Kochan had two hits, including a double.

Agawam 3, Easthampton 2 — The Brownies scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to walk off with a 3-2 victory on Thursday in Agawam.

Rosie Follet struck out six in the circle for the Eagles, allowing eight hits and no walks, while the offense was powered by Madison Urban’s solo home run. Makenna Slate also had a hit and drove in a run for Easthampton.

Tantasqua 20 Belchertown 0 — The Orioles were over-powered on both sides of the softball diamond on Thursday.

Belchertown fell to 7-5 on the season.

Holyoke 15, Palmer 9 — The Purple Knights led 15-4 before Palmer strung five unanswered runs together to make things interesting.

Jayshalee Santos tallied four hits and an RBI, Kylie Blaha recorded three hits and three RBIs and Jessayra Maldonado knocked in two runs on two hits to pace Holyoke’s offense.

Baseball

Holyoke 12, Chicopee 2 (5) – The Knights scored six runs in the second to break a 1-1 tie, pulling away for a run-ruled win.

Theo Marion struck out six in a solid five-inning performance on the mound for Holyoke, while Matt Dumoulin and Tristan Salgado each had two hits and two RBIs.

Agawam 10, Belchertown 0 (5) — The Orioles committed eight errors in a forgettable loss on the road at Agawam on Thursday. Carsten Matthews had two hits for Belchertown, and Daniel Hulmes singled and walked.

Easthampton 4, Westfield Tech 3 — Knotted up at three heading into the seventh, Anthony Incampo walked the Eagles off with an RBI single – scoring Brayden O’Connor from third.

Incampo, Topher Reardon and Bailey Davis each scored in the first inning, then Easthampton went quiet before ending the game in style in the bottom half of the last.

Central 10, Northampton 0 (5) — Central’s Franklyn Torres no-hit the Blue Devils on Thursday, striking out six and walking three in five innings of work.

Eli Kircsak, Jamie Fowler and Asher Garretson each drew base on balls for Northampton.

Girls lacrosse

Granby 20, Lee 19 — After trailing 10-7, the Rams erupted in the second half to secure a dramatic come-from-behind win behind eight goals and three assists from Kalli White.

Brenna Moreno had eight goals of her own in one of the best performances Hampshire County has seen from a lacrosse duo this season. McKenna Zumbruski tallied a hat trick while Mylin Laliberte (one goal, one assist) rounded out Granby’s scoring.

Hampshire 14, Pittsfield 3 — It was a senior night to remember for the Raiders’ Anna Puttick. Five goals and an assist off Puttick’s stick sent her over the 100-point total for her career in Hampshire’s big win.

Ryleigh Fennessey tallied a hat trick while Mary Thibault and Josie Taylor each scored twice as well.

South Hadley 12, Wahconah 7 — Four Raquel Losty goals and three more from Maddy McArdle matched Wahconah’s scoring and helped the Tigers to victory.

Ava Asselin (two goals, two assists), Margo Watkins (two goals, one assist) and Emily Piligian (one goal) capped off South Hadley’s offense. Riley Nestor tallied nine saves in the cage.

Boys volleyball

East Longmeadow 3, Belchertown 2 — The Orioles won the first two sets of the evening, but ultimately dropped the next three in a heartbreaking loss to the Spartans.

Set scores were 25-18, 25-22, 22-25, 14-25, 12-15.

Senior setter Rainer Kristensen recorded his 1,000th career assist after dishing out a whopping 34 of them on Thursday. Brian Burns put down a team-high 17 kills for Belchertown.

Longmeadow 3, Frontier 0 — Tavo Vincent-Warner dished 14 assists for the Redhawks in a 25-17, 25-21, 25-16 loss to the Lancers in Longmeadow Thursday. 

Aleks Carey put down seven kills, Jack Carey tallied five kills while Will Reading recorded two kills for Frontier. 

Boys tennis

Northampton 4, Agawam 1 — Both Reilly Fowles and Galen Fowles didn’t drop a game in their first and second singles wins for the Blue Devils. 

Northampton swept both doubles matches as well, as Reed O’Connor and Oliver Levine (first doubles, 6-0, 6-1) highlighted the two victories with a dominant showing.

Longmeadow 3, Amherst 2 — Miles Jeffries impressed at first singles, cruising to a 6-1, 6-0 win, but the ‘Canes still fell in a close one to Longmeadow.

Elias Katsaros picked up the other Amherst win at No. 2 singles, winning 6-4, 6-2.

Girls tennis

Belchertown 3, Ludlow 2 — The Orioles swept doubles to earn the team win, as the No. 1 duo of Emalee Chaisson and Mia Corish nabbed a 7-5, 6-2 win, while the second doubles pairing of Amanda Murray and Alexa Karabetsos were victorious via 6-4, 7-5 scores.

Ava Shea won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1 singles for Belchertown.

PVCICS 5, Greenfield 0 — Elisa Shinn set the tone at first singles for the Dragons, scoring a 6-0, 6-0 sweep, while Sabine Loinaz (6-3, forf.) and Nina Zorzi (6-1, 6-2) also won singles matches for PVCICS.

Eloise Tuleja and Chelsea Chartier teamed for a 6-1, 6-2 win at first doubles while Kendall Christensen and Lien Powers-Moran took a 6-1, 6-1 decision at No. 2.

Amherst 3, Minnechaug 2 — The ‘Canes swept both doubles matches and picked up a win at third singles to defeat Minnechaug on Thursday.

Aliya Osman (No. 3 singles, 6-2, 6-4), Emma Learned-Miller and Mahima Ganesan (No. 1 doubles, 7-6, 6-2) and Elena Ruiz and Janaki Ewoton (second doubles, 6-4, 3-6, 6-3) were Amherst’s winners.

Girls ultimate

Four Rivers 12, Amherst 9 — The Hurricanes fell behind 6-1 before battling back to within one, 7-6, but that’s as close as they would get in a hard-fought defeat to Four Rivers on Thursday.

Amherst, led by Phoebe Young, Addie Mager, Annabel Ogden and Emily Feldstein, dropped to 9-7 on the season with two big tournaments left to play.

Late Wednesday results

Track and field

South Hadley 70, Easthampton 51 (boys); South Hadley 87, Easthampton 31 (girls) — With a dominant performance on Wednesday, the Tigers girls team claimed the Suburban League title thanks to an undefeated dual meet season. The boys finished 4-1, good for second in their league.

Abby Gelinas won the 100, triple jump and teamed up with Arianna Melendez, Grace Levreault and Ally Fleury in the 4x100 relay. Addy Hill won both the mile and two mile, Melendez grabbed first place in the 200 and the long jump while Gwen Marion triumphed in the 200 and long jump for South Hadley.

On the boys side, the Tigers’ Jameson Webber (400, 400 hurdles) and Nathan Hutchinson (mile, 800) won multiple events, and Nelson Gomez swept the triple and long jumps for Easthampton.

Boys volleyball

PVCA 3, South Hadley 0 — The Tigers were competitive in all three sets, but they didn’t quite have enough to get past PVCA in a 25-19, 25-23, 25-17 loss on Wednesday.

Beau Briere put down 10 kills and added nine digs, Connor Racine-Rocheleau tallied three kills, three aces, 2.5 blocks and two digs, Junoon Giridhar dished out 15 assists and Sam Morozov recorded 18 digs and two aces for South Hadley.
