High schools: Hopkins Academy girls basketball gets 1st win over Athol

For the first time all season, the Hopkins Academy girls basketball checked off one in the win column on Friday night.

Ten different players scored points, and the balanced Golden Hawks built a double-digit halftime lead en route to a 40-29 victory over Athol at Reed Gymnasium in Hadley.

The Golden Hawks (1-10) led 25-11 at halftime, and posted a season-high in points scored (40).

Cassidy Fyden set the tone with a team-high eight points, followed by Chloe Kosciuski and Anna Conklin with six points apiece. Maggie Potter tossed in  five points and Morgan Augustin added four in the win.

Boys basketball

Smith Academy 69, Turners Falls 61 (OT) — The Falcons outscored Turners by a 14-6 margin in the extra session to hold on for a Hampshire League North victory on Friday.

Smith’s Greg Stone led all scorers with 25 points, including an 11-for-14 showing from the free throw line. Garrett Willard also went for 20 in the win, knocking down five 3-pointers along the way. Connor Kowalski made it three Falcons in double figures with 17 points, and the visitors knocked down 10 3-pointers overall to score the win.

Hampshire 59, Franklin Tech 40 — The Raiders used a 26-8 edge in the second quarter to take control of the Hampshire League North contest on Friday night.

Liam Pond’s 16 points powered Hampshire, which trailed 12-8 after one quarter before taking a 34-20 halftime lead. Adam Golasinski and Koleton Kolodziej each scored 10 points in the victory.

Granby 72, Easthampton 65 — Gavier Fernandez poured in a game-high 27 points, and the Rams held off a stellar effort from Easthampton for a tight victory on Friday.

Sawyer Clarke went for 13 points and Colin Murdock added 12 in the win for Granby. Brayden English led four Easthampton players in double figures with 18 points, followed by Chase Cummings  with 15 points.

Frontier 56, Ludlow 43 — Owen Babb was a force inside for the Redhawks, tossing in 27 points — 21 coming in the second half — to help Frontier earn an independent win over the Lions in Ludlow on Friday. 

Frontier trailed 26-18 at the half before outscoring Ludlow 38-15 in the second half. 

Nico Fasulo scored 10 points, Garrett Dredge finished with nine points while Alex Ellis added five points for the Redhawks. 

Boys swimming

Belchertown 120, Chicopee Comp 36 — Luke Giguere and JR Zlogar each won two individual events to help the Orioles roll on Friday.

Giguere won the 50-yard freestyle (22.87 seconds) and 100 backstroke (54.51), while Zlogar took the 100 breaststroke (1:10.58) and 200 free (2:00.77).

Girls basketball

South Hadley 51, Hampshire 30 — Se ven Tigers players scored at least five points – led by 11 from Cara Dean – in what was their seventh  straight win on Thursday night. Taylor Bullough and CC Gurek each dropped eight points, whi le Drew Alley and Kate Phillips added seven apiece.

Alex Henrichon’s game-high 13 points weren’t enough for Hampshire (6-7). Destiny Saltis scored nine and Addie Miklasiewicz added six points in the Raiders loss.

Belchertown 53, Monument Mountain 35 — Chloe  LaRoche buried five 3s en route to a 24-point performance as the Orioles cruised at home in a Central League matchup Thursday night.

Laura Cote (eight) and Aubrey McCain (eight) combined for 16 points, and Morghan Litz tossed in five points in the Belchertown win.

Easthampton 66, Ware 34 — Kayley Downie (12 points), Sophia Faginski (12 points) and Piper Collins (10 points) each scored in double figures to lead the Eagles to a 32-point win.

Christine Raymond added eight points and Addison Barr  chipped in seven for Easthampton, which led 37-1 0 at halftime.
