High schools: Hampshire Regional baseball thumps Easthampton

Each of the Hampshire Regional baseball team’s nine starters crossed home plate as the Raiders picked up their second Hampshire County win of the week via a 17-4 five-inning victory over Easthampton on Tuesday afternoon.

Hampshire senior Liam Pond went 2-for-5 and scored four runs while both Zach Phakos and Drew Thompson tallied three hits apiece at the dish. An eight-run first inning vaulted the Raiders to victory.

Easthampton managed just four hits in the loss, with Chris Gallagher (one run), Jason Sigda (one run), Christian D’Onofrio (one run) and Brayden O’Connor tallying base knocks.

Hampshire (3-1) is off until April 15 when it hosts Holyoke at 1 p.m., while Easthampton (0-2) will prepare for a Friday bout with Frontier (4 p.m.).

Longmeadow 7, Belchertown 4 — The host Orioles carried a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning, but the Lancers bats woke up late and hung three runs apiece over the last two frames to come from behind and grab the win.

Ian McDonald, Jake Waller and Ryan Gould recorded a hit each, accounting for all of Belchertown’s hits in the loss. Gould and Canyon Charron drove in runs at the plate. On the bump was Orioles ace Josh Misiaszek, who struck out six and surrendered three earned runs in five and a third innings.

Pope Francis 20, Northampton 4 — The Cardinals hung a 20 spot on the Blue Devils in Northampton on Tuesday, as Pope Francis – a perennial baseball power in Western Massachusetts – was too much for a young Northampton group.

Matthew Walko drove in two RBIs on two hits in the loss.

Hampshire 13, Minnechaug 3 — Eight different Raiders recorded a hit in the win, led by Ryanne Dubay’s three hits and two RBIs at the plate and nine strikeouts in the circle.

Tegan Charles also tallied three hits and two RBI, while Ashley Cortis ripped two hits and drove in a run. A five-run first and five-run sixth pushed Hampshire to its third consecutive win by double digits in as many tries.

Turners Falls 22, Northampton 2 — A day removed from a 23-0 loss to Greenfield, the Blue Devils welcomed another Franklin County powerhouse in Turners Falls on Tuesday.

Northampton managed four hits, with Haly Doucette-Kaplan, Caroline Riordan, Jayda Alejandro and Kira Lawrence Ridell recording those. Alejandro and Lawrence Riddell drove in runs in the Blue Devils loss.

Girls lacrosse

Amherst 15, Wahconah 4 — The ‘Canes took a commanding 10-1 lead into the break, and breezed to an 11-goal win over the Warriors behind a massive outing from Talia Sadiq.

Sadiq led the way with five goals and an assist, Francesca Sloan added five points (three goals, two assists) of her own and Kiko Bhowmik notched two goals and an assist. Elsewhere, Ava Carey (two), Ivorie Arguin (two) and Claire Kennedy (one) each found the back of the net to round out Amherst’s scoring.

Belchertown 12, Pope Francis 11 — There were no shortage of goals in the battle of the birds on Tuesday afternoon, and the Orioles did just enough to squeak out a nail-biting win over the Cardinals on the road.

Paige Magner found the back of the net five times to pace Belchertown, while Madysen LePage (three goals) notched a hat trick of her own. Kenzie LePage and Lia Pikul each scored a pair of goals as well to round out the Orioles scoring. Navigating the cage was Emma Almeida, who made four saves in the win.

Boys lacrosse

Belchertown 11, Hoosac Valley 9 – The Orioles exploded for 10 goals in the first half and held off a late rally for a victory on Tuesday.

Nico St. George paced Belchertown with five goals, while Charlie Fijal went for a hat trick and an assist and Vinny Ting notched two goals and two helpers.

Boys tennis

Belchertown 5, Central 0 – Cam Kaczowska won a marathon match at second singles to help the Orioles secure the sweep on Tuesday.

He captured a 2-6, 7-6 (8-6), 12-10 victory for Belchertown. Trevor Weiss (6-1, 6-3) and Luke Dudek (6-1, 6-0) also won singles matches, while the first doubles tandem of Jake Gormely/Tyler Burrows (6-3, 6-2) and the second doubles team of Mason Pobieglo/Josh O'Connor snagged a 6-3, 6-4 win.

PVCICS 5, SICS 0 — It was smooth sailing for the Dragons on Tuesday afternoon, as they lost just one set all day en route to their second win in as many days – this time defeating Springfield International Charter at Hampshire College.

Sixth grader Lee Ferguson made his first singles debut for PVCICS, and made quick work of Jason Pham, 6-0, 6-0. Gabe Loinaz (No. 2, 6-2, 6-1) and Asa Taggert (No. 3, 1-6, 6-3, 10-5) cleaned up the other singles matches for the Dragons, while James and Teddy Scott (first doubles) and Derek and Devan Ye (second doubles) cruised to straight set victories.

Girls tennis

Belchertown 5, Holyoke 0 – The Orioles dropped just four games across five matches en route to the sweep of Holyoke on Tuesday.

Ava Shea (6-0, 6-0), Anna Stamp (6-1, 6-0) and Zoe Bate (6-1, 6-1) were singles winners for Belchertown. The Orioles received doubles wins by Mia Corish and Emalee Chaisson (6-0, 6-0) at No. 1, and Bella Cebula and Alena Karabetsos (6-1, 6-0) at No. 2.

Longmeadow 5, Northampton 0 — The Blue Devils couldn’t get on the board against Western Mass. power Longmeadow on Tuesday afternoon, falling to 1-1 on the season.

Northampton’s Emi Warren and Casey Barder were close to picking up a win at second doubles, dropping the second set 6-4 in a straight set loss.

Boys volleyball

South Hadley 3, HC West 0 – The Tigers cruised to another victory, notching a 25-22, 25-18, 25-12 sweep on Tuesday behind 10 kills and six digs from Beau Briere.

Other strong performances for South Hadley came from Jonathon Grim (7 kills, 5 aces, 1 dig), Connor Racine-Rocheleau (6 kills, 3 assists, 2 aces, 3 digs, 2 blocks), Junoon Giridhar (2 kills, 18 assists, 1 ace, 2 digs), and Sam Morozov (10 digs).

Chicopee Comp 3, Belchertown 0 — The Orioles kept it close with the Colts in the first two sets, dropping them 25-15, 25-19, but couldn’t muster up the same energy in the third – losing 25-9 to end the match.

Noah Yankson and Shea MacLean put down eight kills apiece, and Rainer Kristensen dished out 19 assists in the loss. Belchertown (0-3) is still searching for its first win of the spring, and will return to the court for a road contest on Thursday against Agawam at 5:30 p.m.

West Springfield 3, Frontier 0 — Aleks Carey finished with 12 kills for the Redhawks in a 25-16, 25-17, 25-21 loss to the Terriers in West Springfield on Tuesday. 

Jack Carey tallied nine kills, Dean Gray recorded two kills while Tavo Vincent-Warner dished 22 assists for Frontier.

Track & field

South Hadley 75.5, Palmer 39.5 (boys) — Nathan Hutchinson ran the mile in 5:15.00 to grab first place as the Tigers dominated their dual meet with Palmer on Tuesday.

Jameson Webber (110 hurdles, 16.30), Matt Gillis (400 hurdles, 56.20 and triple jump, 36-10), Colby Carleton (long jump, 20-00), Jeremey Greenberg (shot put, 32-06 1/2) and Micah Litovich (discus, 90-06) were all winners for the Tigers as well.

Late Monday results

Baseball

Ware 1, South Hadley 0 — John Mumper shoved a gem for Ware, giving up just one hit and three walks on five strikeouts in a complete game shutout of South Hadley on Monday.

Ware recorded its only run in the bottom of the fourth. Tigers pitcher Matt Drobiak had a terrific outing of his own, throwing six innings – surrendering the one run, one walk and four hits while striking out three. Drobiak recorded the only South Hadley hit – a double – in the loss.

Boys tennis

PVCICS 4, PVCA 1 — The Dragons swept both doubles matches and picked up two dominant wins at first and second singles to breeze by Pioneer Valley Christian Academy on Monday afternoon.

Aidan Cleary beat PVCA’s Brad Hill 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 singles, while Lee Ferguson earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 2 singles. PVCICS’ first doubles duo of James and Teddy Scott buckled down to defeat Gabriel Malloy and Alejandro Rodriguez, while Derek and Devan Ye clipped Reese Ficarra and Ben Lamon 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 doubles to round out the Dragons’ winners.

Frontier 4, Palmer 1 — Frontier’s Jacob Han lost a three-set thriller (4-6, 6-3, 10-8) to Palmer’s Owen Pear at No. 1 singles, but the rest of the Redhawks squad picked him up elsewhere.

Robert Fuqua (6-1, 6-2) earned a win at No. 2 singles, Caiden Manning out-lasted Shane Normoyle (3-6, 6-3, 7-5) at third singles while both Oliver Brown and Brayden Reipold (first doubles) along with Donovan Vichi and Matthew Sibley (second doubles) earned wins as well.
