High schools: Belchertown baseball offense erupts in 27-4 win over Holyoke

A whopping 27 hits from 11 different players powered the Belchertown baseball team to a 27-4 five-inning victory over Holyoke on Tuesday at MacKenzie Stadium in Holyoke.

Ian McDonald led the way with four hits and three RBIs for the Orioles, which scored 14 runs in the top of the first inning. Ryan Gould (three hits, two RBIs) and Canyon Charron (three hits, four RBIs) also had monster outings at the plate in the victory.

Evan Ferguson added two hits and four RBIs for the visitors.

Holyoke’s Jovaughn Rivera doubled and drove in two runs for the hosts, which scored all four of its runs in the bottom of the third.

South Hadley 11, Mount Greylock 1 (6) — The Tigers trailed 1-0 after one inning of play, then tallied eight runs over the next two innings en route to a six-inning mercy rule win over the Mounties.

Jackson Keller (one run, three RBI), Burke Belsky (RBI) and Matt Drobiak (one run) each recorded two hits while Memphis Huertas and John Viola both scored three times for South Hadley.

Pathfinder 11, Gateway 8 — A last-ditch rally wasn’t enough for the Gators, which scored five runs in the top of the seventh to get within striking distance on Tuesday.

Jacob Maynard and Dalton Savoy each recorded two hits, with Maynard crossing home plate twice to pace Gateway’s bats.

East Longmeadow 9, Northampton 7 — Just as it did on Monday, the Blue Devils did everything they could to get back into the game late.

Northampton ripped off four runs in the top of the sixth to make it a game, but it was too little too late as its record now sits at 0-7.

Softball

Mohawk Trail 11, Northampton 5 — Haly Doucette-Kaplan struck out seven in the circle for the Blue Devils in a Tuesday loss to the Warriors.

Doucette-Kaplan added two hits to pace the offense for Northampton. Mohawk Trail pitcher Riley Giard struck out 17.

Pope Francis 8, Belchertown 3 — The Cardinals scored at least one run in six of the seven innings to pull away from the Orioles on Tuesday afternoon.

Belchertown’s Natalie Rose tallied two hits and an RBI while Emily Waller added a two-run single of her own.

Central 24, Granby 3 — The Rams were no-hit during Tuesday’s six-inning loss to the Golden Eagles.

Granby drew 11 walks in the contest, with Meredith Bartosz, Jordyn Placzek and Ellie Szlosek coming around to score the trio of runs.

Wahconah 3, Hopkins 2 — One run apiece in the fifth and sixth innings weren’t enough for the Golden Hawks in a nail-biting loss on Tuesday.

Alayna Bailey (one run), Madelei Gallo-O’Connell (one run), Lily Ellia and Margaret Potter notched a hit each for Hopkins.

Palmer 15, Smith Academy 7 — Caitlin Graves and Emma Moynihan each had two hits, including a triple, to pace the Falcons in a loss on Tuesday.

Sophia Jagodzinski struck out six in the circle for Smith Academy, which also received two hits and an RBI from Meghan Bell. Emilia Neves, Emma Tisdell, Marissa Belina and Anna Scagel all had a hit on the afternoon.

Girls lacrosse

Northampton 12, Belchertown 5 – Ally Busone tallied four goals and won five draw controls, while Makayla Fydenkevez and Teagan McDonald each recorded hat-tricks to give Northampton a bounceback win. Paige Magner scored four goals and totaled six draw controls for Belchertown.

Amherst 13, Hoosac Valley 7 — Aliyah Kenney, Talia Sadiq and Abi Como each recorded a hat trick for the high-octane Hurricanes offense.

Francesca Sloan and Kiko Bhowmik added two goals apiece as Amherst continues its perfect start to the 2024 season – now sitting at 5-0.

South Hadley 17, Wahconah 4 —  Four goals apiece from Eliana Britton and Raquel Losty sent the Tigers to a decisive victory on Tuesday.

Maddy McArdle notched a hat trick for South Hadley, which received two goals apiece from Margaret Watkins, Emily Piligian and Mia Beaulieu.

Boys tennis

Longmeadow 3, Amherst 2 — Amherst won the top two singles matches, but Longmeadow won third singles and both doubles matches to take the win.

Miles Jeffries won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1 singles and Elias Katsaros won 7-5, 6-3 at second singles.

PVCICS 5, Turners Falls 0 — The Dragons breezed to a sweep in their first match back after vacation, with the closest win coming at No. 1 singles where Aidan Cleary snagged a 6-1, 6-4 win.

Lee Ferguson and Clayton English swept 6-0, 6-0 scores at second and third singles, while James and Teddy Scott also won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. PVCICS’ Derek and Devan Ye notched a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles.

Girls tennis

Belchertown 5, Pope Francis 0 — Amanda Murray won the match of the day at No. 2 singles, securing a 6-7, 10-5, 10-5 victory to help the Orioles to a team sweep.

Ava Shea was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at No. 1 singles, and Belchertown’s Zoe Bate also swept a 6-0, 6-0 decision at No. 3. Mia Corish and Emalee Chaisson scored a 6-0, 6-0 first doubles win, and the No. 2 tandem of Ellie Gelinas and Kasey Gibbons notched a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

Northampton 4, South Hadley 1 — Ursula Von Goeler cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles while Summer Sorensen (6-0, 6-0) and Bess King Pollet (6-0, 6-0) added sweeps as the Blue Devils took care of business in the singles matches on Tuesday.

Northampton’s Margaux Galvio and Emi Warren (6-4, 6-1) earned a win at No. 1 doubles, and South Hadley’s Cara Dean and Abby Ngure (6-1, 6-4) picked up a win at second doubles.

Ludlow 3, Amherst 2 — Hurricanes star Sofia DaSilva-Askew fought hard and earned a come-from-behind win at No. 1 singles in a three-set thriller (5-7, 6-3, 6-1), but the ‘Canes fell to the Lions on Tuesday.

Emma Learned-Miller and Mahina Ganesun won 6-2, 6-3 at first doubles to round out Amherst’s winners.

Boys volleyball

Ludlow 3, Frontier 1 —  Aleks Carey smashed 21 kills and six aces for the Redhawks in a 25-23, 18-25, 25-19, 25-19 loss to the Lions at Goodnow Gymnasium. 

Jack Carey put down 11 kills, Will Reading recorded five kills while Tavo Vincent-Warner dished 38 assists.

Track & field

Northampton 84.5, Agawam 60.5 (girls) — The Blue Devils dominated the track events on Tuesday en route to a comfortable win over Agawam.

Allie Sullivan (100m, 13.20), Ella Hoogendyk (200m, 29.80), Maddalena Figueroa-Starr (400m, 1:04.20), Maeve O’Neil (800m, 2:32.80 and two mile, 13:00.90), Charlotte Shimpach (mile, 6:05.80) and Eleanor Lewis (110m hurdles, 17.70 and 400m hurdles, 1:12.90) all picked up wins for Northampton.

Boys lacrosse

Amherst 12, Granby 2 — Skyler Ferro put forth a spectacular six-point perfomance to lead the Hurricanes to victory on Monday. His three goals helped him reach the 100-goal plateau for his career.

Taikoda Wilson (two), Tre Bowman (two), Josh Goodhind, Silas Hazen, Sawyer Ferro, Liam Worgess and Owen Cunniffe all tallied scores as well in Amherst’s win.

Baseball

Hampshire 13, Greenfield 3 – Mikey Thompson clubbed a 3-run home run and Jacob Sicard also smacked a home run to lift the Raiders on Monday.  

Hampshire's offense came alive as the Raiders hit five doubles. All nine starters scored a run, and five Raiders had two hits apiece.

Will Hogan earned the win with 5 1/3 innings, striking out six.

Softball

Monument Mountain 16, Amherst 5 — The Hurricanes scored the game’s first three runs and held a 3-0 lead into the fifth inning, but the Spartans’ offense would erupt for 16 runs over the next three frames to pull away.

Nina Holden went 3-for-3 with two runs scored, Rosalee Davis (two RBI) and Stephanie Barton each collected two hits and Corrine Charlebois drove home two runs for Amherst.

Boys tennis

Brattleboro Union 5, Frontier 0 — The Redhawks traveled up north into Vermont and suffered a loss to Brattleboro on Monday afternoon.

Donovan Vichi and Matt Sibley fought hard at second doubles, but fell 6-4, 6-3 in the closest match of the day.

Girls tennis

Longmeadow 4, Amherst 1 — Emma Learned-Miller picked up the only victory for the Hurricanes on Monday, defeating Longmeadow’s Marly Ducharme 6-3, 7-5.

Amherst’s Sofia DaSilva-Askew fell at first singles 6-3, 6-1 while Cynthia Tian and Mahima Ganesan kept it competitive in a second doubles defeat, 6-3, 6-2.

Girls  track and field

East Longmeadow 91, Amherst 54 — The Canes fell on Monday, but they put forth strong efforts to take home first in the 4x100 (Ololara Baptiste, Ella Austin, Ruby Austin, Maddie Hockman, 52.5) and 4x400 relays (Brooke Nedeau, Ella Austin, Ruby Austin, Moriah Luetjen, 4:33.6).

Elizabeth Sawicki (1:10.8) won the 400 hurdles, Nedeau (13:29.4) took first in the two mile, Luetjen (2:28.9) triumphed in the 800m and Baptiste (26.2) crossed the line first in the 200m to round out track winners. Yairelis Bachand was Amherst’s lone field winner, tossing a 68-9 in the discus.
