Sofia Holden and Mia Shaw did the job in the pitching circle, and the Amherst softball team pounded out 14 hits en route to a dominant 14-0 win over St. Mary’s in a five-inning run-ruled contest on Friday in Amherst.

Holden struck out five in two scoreless innings before Shaw pitched three shutout frames with six strikeouts.

At the plate, Shaw was a perfect 4-for-4 to pace the Hurricanes (2-1), while Nina Holden drove in five runs on two hits. Rosalee Davis and Sofia Holden each had multiple hits in the win.

Amherst scored nine runs in the first inning en route to the run-ruled win.

Baseball

Minnechaug 10, Belchertown 1 — The Falcons put together a six-run first inning and never looked back, as the Orioles scraped across just one run in an independent loss on Friday afternoon.

Josh Misiaszek and Derek Gould ripped two hits each and Ian McDonald added another, with Belchertown plating its lone run in the top of the fourth inning. Orioles pitcher Jake Waller pitched three stellar innings in relief, giving up no runs and no hits with three strikeouts.

Taconic 12, Holyoke 1 (5) — The Thunder did almost all of their damage in the top of the fourth inning, posting 10 of their 12 runs en route to a five-inning win over Holyoke.

Justin Rivera and Aiden Robinson were the only two Purple Knights batters to record a hit in the loss.

Northampton 4, Minnechaug 1 —  Reilly Fowles dominated his match at first singles, defeating Minnechaug’s Kelvin Ohemeng 6-2, 6-1 to help the Blue Devils to a comfortable gentlemen’s sweep over the Falcons on Friday.

Durrell Patrick earned a 6-2, 6-4 win at second singles, and Jude McCutcheon and Eli Wool cruised past their second doubles opponents in dominant fashion, 6-0, 6-0.

  Girls lacrosse

Westfield 12, South Hadley 7 —  The  Tigers saw four different players record goals, but it wasn’t enough to get past Westfield in their home opener on Friday. South Hadley fell to 0-3 in the loss.

Raquel Losty (one assist), Maddy McArdle (two assists) and Emily Piligian (one assist) each tallied two goals, Mia Beaulieu added a goal and Riley Nestor recorded eight saves in the cage for South Hadley.

Boys  volleyball

Granby 3, Duggan 0 — Behind nine kills from Michael Swanigan and a combined 29 aces between Jake Gagnon (15) and Braedan Gallagher (14), the Rams cruised to a straight set victory over Duggan on Friday.

Set scores were 25-11, 25-9, 25-12.

Gagnon dished out a game-high seven assists, with Gallagher and Swanigan adding four each. Nicolas Grandmont blocked two attempts in the Granby win.

Frontier 3, Putnam 1 — Make it two in a row for the Redhawks.

Led by 17 kills from Aleks Carey, Frontier walked away with a 3-1 victory in their first PVIAC East match of the season. 

Set scores 25-23, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21.

Jack Carey finished with 14 kills, Tavo Vincent Warner dished 29 assists, Evan Maio came up with 19 digs while Theo Sargent tallied three aces for the Redhawks.

Southwick 3, Holyoke 0 — Each set was tight, but the Purple Knights outlasted the Rams in a PVIAC South battle on Friday night. Holyoke overcame 20 kills from Southwick’s Nicolas Spina en route to victory.

Set scores were 27-25, 25-23, 25-18 as Holyoke improved to 2-1 with its second consecutive win.
