AMHERST — No. 1 Joseph Case and No. 2 Hampshire got through just an inning and a half of play before the skies opened up during Friday's MIAA Division 4 championship game.

Midway through Hailey Berube’s at-bat in the bottom of the second, the umpires determined that the pouring rain was interfering with the game and waved off the contest while the score was still 0-0. After a brief rain delay, where both dugouts yelled out song requests to an MIAA official playing MC in the press box, the umpires made the call to officially postpone the state final.

The two teams will resume the game on Monday, with a tentative start time of 5 p.m. at Worcester State University’s Rockwood Field.

Both teams had almost identical stat lines in the short time they played. Hampshire opened up the game with a double from Hailey Wodecki after Ashley Cortis grounded out to shortstop. Wodecki blasted a ball to the right field fence that got behind the outfielder, yelling to the dugout in her excitement.

Wodecki moved to third on a passed ball during Joss Mettey’s at-bat, and after Mettey was thrown out at first, CC Thayer walked to put runners on first and third with no outs. Teagan Charles flew out to right field to end the inning.

Case also got a hit and a walk in its first trip to the plate, with Alexandria Yost reaching on a single and moving to second when Olivia Silva walked on the next trip to the plate. Emma Czarniecki and Thayer caught fly balls to strand the runners and keep the game deadlocked at 0-0.

Hampshire went 1-2-3 in the top of the second as the rain started to come down harder, and by the time the Raiders took the field for the bottom of the second, the umpires were starting to talk about potentially postponing the game. Skye Dupre walked and stole second on a passed ball that slid through catcher Raegan Dubay. By that point, the rain was coming down so hard that there weren’t enough towels in the world that could keep a softball dry, and the umpires called the game in the middle of Berube’s at-bat.
