A flood watch is in effect for communities along the lower Connecticut River from Montague, Massachusetts to Middle Haddam, Connecticut.

The possible flooding comes as unseasonably warm weather melts snow in Vermont and New Hampshire. That could cause the river to rise to near or above flood stage — potentially causing minor flooding — on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.

The high waters could affect Franklin, Hampden and Hampshire counties. The watch is also in effect for Hartford and Middlesex counties in Connecticut.

“Ideally, people should stay off the water until it recedes,” said Capt. David Murrett of the Northampton Fire Department. “I know it’s nice out so people want to get out, but it’s extremely dangerous.”

Murrett cautioned anyone chancing a jaunt on the water to wear a life jacket and watch for floating logs.
