EASTHAMPTON — Fire Chief David Mottor was sworn in Friday morning as the 95th president of the Fire Chiefs Association of Massachusetts.

Fire chiefs from across the state gathered at the Log Cabin Banquet Facility in Holyoke for the association’s annual installation of officers.

Mottor said there are great people at the association he’s looking forward to working with, and anticipates the challenge of the position, which he’ll work at after his regular hours as fire chief.

“It’s demanding,” Mottor said.

The association focuses on safety for fire service and makes sure communities are fire safe.

As president, Mottor will talk with state officials and speak to pending bills the association has sponsored. A recent bill proposed to establish an emergency equipment grant program for firefighters. The association also supports a provision for fire sprinklers in new one- and two-family homes.

Each year, a president, first vice president and second vice president are sworn in. Officers like Mottor move up in rank each year after being elected second vice president.

Mottor started at the Easthampton Fire Department as an on-call firefighter in 1990 and became a full-time firefighter in 1994. In 2009, he became Easthampton’s fire chief and joined the state’s fire chief association.

“Chief Mottor is not only an excellent chief, he’s a great guy,” said Mayor Karen Cadieux. “His pride has been dedicated to the fire department, his family and the community.”

During any free time the chief has, Cadieux said, you can find Mottor coaching and volunteering at Nonotuck Park, helping out to repair buildings or working at the concession stand flipping burgers or making popcorn.
