Swimming: Belchertown, Amherst split meet (PHOTOS)

BELCHERTOWN – Amherst’s defending state champion girls swim team won nine events against Belchertown on Monday at the Chestnut Hill Community School pool and defeated the Orioles, 105-65.

Belchertown held serve at home in the boys meet, 104-65.

Lucy Smith contributed to four of the Hurricanes’ victories. She won the 50-yard freestyle in 25.28 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 1:04.25 as Amherst improved to 3-1.

The senior also swam butterfly on Amherst’s winning 200 medley relay (1:56.43), an event the Hurricanes haven’t lost in more than a year. She anchored Amherst’s winning 400 freestyle relay to close the meet (4:02.68).

Rowan Albertson touched first in the 100 backstroke (1:03.06) and led off the 400 free relay in addition to swimming backstroke on the medley. Finnley Chambers swam freestyle on the medley relay, won the 100 freestyle (58.03) and the 200 free (2:03.72).

Debbie Wells placed first in the 200 individual medley (2:19.93) and 100 breaststroke (1:16.84) and was the breaststroke leg of the medley relay.

Belchertown’s Valerie Williams was first in the 500 free (6:03.24), while Brooke Stelmokas, Hannah Mandeville, Destiny Ranzie and Lauren Morris combined for a 200 freestyle relay victory for the Orioles (1-3).

In the boys meet, Luke Giguere had four wins for the Orioles (4-0). He contributed to both the boys medley win (1:47.78), anchored the 400 freestyle relay (3:50.09) and was on the 200 free relay (1:41.47) while touching first in the 100 free (48.53).

Ryan Gould swam backstroke on the medley relay and swam first in the 400 free while winning the 100 butterfly (59.13).

Nathan Wheeler placed first in the 200 free (2:04.75), and was a part of both freestyle relays. Caleb Perron finished first in the 500 free (5:36.69) and swam butterfly in the medley relay, while Derek Gould anchored the medley relay and 200 free relays.

Amherst’s Sam Kennedy was first in the 50 free (24.34) and 100 backstroke (1:01.34). His teammate Callum McDonald won the 200 IM (2:10.71) for the Hurricanes (1-3).
