UMass women's soccer snaps postseason skid, moves on to semifinals
The University of Massachusetts women's soccer team put its 14-year postseason losing streak in the rearview mirror Thursday as the fourth-seeded Minutewomen beat No. 5 St. Bonaventure 3-1 in the quarterfinal round of the Atlantic 10 tournament at Dayton.
The win earned UMass a rematch with top-seed La Salle, today at 5 p.m. in the semifinals. The Explorers edged the Minutewomen 3-2 in overtime in the teams' previous meeting on Oct. 16 at Rudd Field. No. 3 Dayton will face No. 2 Richmond in the other semifinal at 7:30 p.m.
Freshman Tori Sousa put the Minutewomen (13-4-2) ahead just under nine minutes into the game and Julie Morrissey doubled that lead before halftime.
Deanna Colarossi made it 3-0 in the second half before St. Bonaventure ended the shutout bid for Emily Cota (nine saves) in the 76th minute.
Five UMass players were named to All-Atlantic 10 teams prior to the game. Senior Meghan Collins was named to the first team, while Morrissey, Cota and freshman Moa Mattsson were on the second team.
Mattsson and Sousa were also named to the A-10 All-Rookie Team.
GURLEY DRAFTED IN D-LEAGUE - Former Minuteman guard Anthony Gurley was selected by the Los Angeles D-Fenders in the second round of the NBA Development League draft, Thursday. Gurley, a 6-foot-3 guard, led UMass with 18.7 points per game as a senior.
