Amherst calls for CPA grant proposals

AMHERST - Proposals for affordable housing, historic preservation, recreation and open space projects to be funded under the town's Community Preservation Act account are due Dec. 9.

Interested organizations and individuals can download application forms on the town's website, amherstma.gov.

CPA money is collected through a 1.5 percent tax surcharge and 25 percent state match.

Town Meeting recently voted to spend $580,100 in CPA funds with the largest amounts, at $150,000 and $113,000, going toward protecting property in the Cushman Brook watershed and restoring the historic chimneys at the Jones Library.

Project proposals will be reviewed by the CPA Committee through February.

A public hearing scheduled for Feb. 16 and a vote March 15, before the recommendations are brought before next spring's Town Meeting for approval.

Completed applications should be sent to the Accounting Office, attention Sonia Aldrich, Comptroller, Town of Amherst, 4 Boltwood Ave., Amherst, MA 01002, or by email to aldrichs@amherstma.gov.

here's why

Why should I have to pay for a war that I don't believe in?
Why should I have to pay property taxes that fund public schools when I don't have children?
Why should I have to pay for bank bailouts when their poor management caused their crisis?
Gary, I could go on and on. That's how taxes work. You don't get to pick and choose what items you will personally sponsor, it's all for the greater good.
In fact, the legality of abortion has lowered the crime rate. Really--this can be proved--states that legalized abortion first had their crime rate drop first 15-20 years later. Why? Because unwanted children are often abused, bounced around, and not taught character building skills. This often leads to crime, and of course more unwanted children.
You pay much much more to support these unwanted children through their young lives, then support their incarceration through their adult lives then you would by paying for an abortion.
And finally, I'll leave you with another statistic: 70% of anti-abortion leaders are men. 100% will never get pregnant.

i should not have to pay for somebodies abortion

Why should my tax dollars pay for an abortion if I consider it murder? Think of the fetus that is being destroyed by the abortion. The Hyde amendment bans federal funding of abortions. Martha - I'm not voting for you.
