WORCESTER — Since the inception of the new statewide tournament format, Joseph Case has been a thorn in Hampshire Regional’s side. The Cardinals knocked off the Raiders in the 2023 state championship game, and again defeated them in last season’s quarterfinal matchup en route to a second-straight MIAA Division 4 crown.

GRANBY — Trailing 8-6 in the fifth and final set of Thursday’s MIAA Division 2 preliminary round match against No. 34 Keefe Tech, No. 31 Granby had to turn it around in a hurry if the Rams wanted to continue their season into the weekend. A Broncos service error put the ball in Daniel Santiago’s hands, and he rifled an ace to tie the set at eight apiece.

BELCHERTOWN — The Belchertown girls tennis team began its MIAA Division 3 state tournament trek with a resounding 4-1 win over Whitinsville Christian on its home court on Wednesday afternoon. The fifth-seeded Orioles’ only defeat came in first singles, but otherwise, it was business as usual for Belchertown in the Round of 32 victory.

SOUTH HADLEY — Paul Dubuc thought he wrote Cara Dean’s name down on the board as part of the list of starters for the third quarter on Tuesday night. Dean, a sophomore, is a regular in the South Hadley girls basketball team’s starting lineup. Dubuc turned to his bench and asked, “where’s Cara,” after the first possession of the second half. She was sitting down waiting patiently to get subbed back in.

GRANBY — A see-saw first half between the No. 3 Granby boys basketball team and No. 19 Rockport ended with an 8-2 Rams run thanks to a pair of Cody Breault 3-pointers. Granby headed to the locker room ahead 29-23. The two sides traded field goals out of the break to make it 31-25, then Vikings guard Josiah Whitley took over.

HOLYOKE — The No. 13 Holyoke boys basketball team entered the second half of its MIAA Division 2 Round of 32 matchup with No. 20 Wakefield ahead 46-32. Although the Purple Knights felt great about where they stood, starting forward Chauncey Ruiz, who put up 10 first-quarter points to kickstart the night, had four fouls.

SOUTH DEERFIELD — After a hard-fought loss to Pittsfield in the Western Mass. Class B semifinals, the Frontier girls basketball team was more than ready for its MIAA Division 4 tournament opener against Manchester Essex on Thursday.
Trailing by three points with five seconds to go in its MIAA Division 4 preliminary round game against No. 33 Assabet Valley Tuesday night, the No. 32 Frontier boys basketball team had one last chance to prolong its season.
