MIAA power ranking updates for Hampshire County teams

The MIAA released its most recent power rankings of the 2025 spring season on Friday morning, and several Hampshire County teams are slotted pretty high in their respective sports/divisions. The Hampshire Regional softball team is the lone local squad to earn a No. 1 ranking, as the Raiders check in as the top seed in Division 4 after appearing at No. 2 in the previous edition.

May is officially upon us, and with that, so is tournament season. The Western Massachusetts baseball and softball tournaments will begin later this month. Some teams are over halfway through their regular season schedules, and others have a loaded back-half slate to make up for a handful of rain outs earlier this spring.

AMHERST — Late in the fourth quarter of Saturday’s UMass football spring game, Team Maroon worked the ball inside the Team White 10-yard line trailing 17-10. Team Maroon quarterback Grant Jordan received a shotgun snap from the 4-yard line, faked the ball to his running back and scrambled right.

AMHERST — The 15th and final practice of the spring took place at McGuirk Alumni Stadium on Thursday morning, as for the first time in 2025, the UMass football team practiced outside of The Bubble thanks to 50 degree and sunny weather. Head coach Joe Harasymiak met with members of the media following practice and had a mix of emotions when asked about the spring.

LOWELL — South Hadley girls basketball head coach Paul Dubuc said his team didn’t show up to the Tsongas Center for a moral victory. That very well could be true, but the Tigers did one thing that no other team in Division 4 had done in the postseason: put up a fight against No. 1 Cathedral.

LOWELL — It felt like history had repeated itself at the Tsongas Center on Sunday afternoon. A year ago, the South Hadley girls basketball team got off to a hot start before ultimately falling to No. 1 Cathedral in the MIAA Division 4 state championship game on the third Sunday of March.

AMHERST — When Joe Harasymiak accepted the UMass football head coaching job back in early December, a handful of members on the Rutgers staff – where Harasymiak was previously the defensive coordinator – were excited for him. They also wanted to go with him based on the relationships they had built with him over the course of their time together.

WORCESTER — After making the MIAA Division 4 state final and graduating only one senior from last season’s team, the town of South Hadley, all of western Mass. and competition across the state expected the South Hadley girls basketball team to end up in that same exact spot come March 2025.

SOUTH HADLEY — Paul Dubuc thought he wrote Cara Dean’s name down on the board as part of the list of starters for the third quarter on Tuesday night. Dean, a sophomore, is a regular in the South Hadley girls basketball team’s starting lineup. Dubuc turned to his bench and asked, “where’s Cara,” after the first possession of the second half. She was sitting down waiting patiently to get subbed back in.

GRANBY — A see-saw first half between the No. 3 Granby boys basketball team and No. 19 Rockport ended with an 8-2 Rams run thanks to a pair of Cody Breault 3-pointers. Granby headed to the locker room ahead 29-23. The two sides traded field goals out of the break to make it 31-25, then Vikings guard Josiah Whitley took over.

NORTHAMPTON – A rockfight of a ballgame saw Northampton and Reading combine for only 55 points through the first three quarters Friday night, and then the teams promptly erupted for 43 total points in the fourth quarter alone.

HOLYOKE — The No. 13 Holyoke boys basketball team entered the second half of its MIAA Division 2 Round of 32 matchup with No. 20 Wakefield ahead 46-32. Although the Purple Knights felt great about where they stood, starting forward Chauncey Ruiz, who put up 10 first-quarter points to kickstart the night, had four fouls.

HATFIELD — Nothing was going the No. 26 Smith Academy boys basketball team’s way through nearly three quarters of play in its MIAA Division 5 preliminary round matchup with No. 39 Community Charter School of Cambridge. And when a Cougars player banked in a 3-pointer from the top of they key to give the visitors their largest lead of the game at 45-31 late in the third frame, the mountain seemed almost too steep to climb.

Hampshire County contingent closes alpine ski season at MIAA Championships

CHARLEMONT — Tuesday marked the end of an era for the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School alpine ski team. For the first time in the program’s history – boys or girls – there won’t be a Scott on the team next season. Juliet Scott helped start the team in the winter of 2018 when her younger brothers, twins James and Teddy, were in sixth grade. The two were both on the inaugural boys team that season, and have been a part of the Dragons squad ever since.

BOSTON — The Amherst girls were the No. 1 seed coming in, and they left no doubt in a dominant showing in the 4x200-meter relay at the MIAA Division 3 Indoor Track & Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track & Athletic Center.

BOSTON — Athletes and teams from across the Valley are set to compete in the MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center this weekend, starting with Amherst, Holyoke and Northampton competing in the Division 3 meet on Friday before Frontier, Hampshire and South Hadley participate in the Division 5 meet on Sunday.
