Another week of the high school basketball season is nearly over, which leaves just one more until the Western Massachusetts tournaments begin. This is edition No. 5 of the Gazette’s weekly high school basketball notebook – the penultimate prior to postseason play. The MIAA released its latest power rankings for boys and girls basketball on Tuesday morning, so we’ll take another look at those as Hampshire County teams continue to jockey for a playoff spot or better seeding.
Cameron Graves scored a season-high 17 points, and the Smith Academy boys basketball team turned a 19-16 halftime lead into a 44-40 victory over Hampshire Regional in Hampshire League North action on Friday night in Westhampton. The game was tied headed into the fourth quarter before the Falcons won the final eight minutes 14-10.
It was a big Hampshire League North showdown at Mallet Gymnasium in Athol on Tuesday between the host Bears and Hampshire Regional.

SOUTH DEERFIELD — The Frontier girls basketball team hasn’t had many tests this season.
Offense was clicking for the Smith Academy girls basketball team in the first half on Thursday night, and the Falcons’ defense took over from there. The hosts scored 30 points in the first half to take 30-11 advantage at the break, then surrendered only four points over the final two quarters en route to a dominant 41-15 triumph over Gateway Regional at Sherry Webb Gymnasium in Hatfield.
SOUTH HADLEY – The South Hadley wrestling team fell short to Franklin County Tech, 36-34, in an entertaining match on Wednesday.

Installment No. 4 of the weekly high school basketball notebook is upon us, and to be honest I’m excited for this one – the last edition in the month of January. We’re that much closer to postseason basketball, so we will take a look at where each team (boys and girls) in Hampshire County currently stands in the Western Mass. and state tournament rankings in their respective classes/divisions.

EASTHAMPTON — The Easthampton girls basketball team used a fast start to ease past Hopkins Academy, 54-27, Thursday night at home.

It’s that time of the week again, as Wednesday evening means Hampshire County high school basketball notebook No. 3 is here. February is on the horizon, which means the eight (boys and girls combined) Western Massachusetts tournaments are as well. Teams across the valley are hoping to play their best basketball of the season over the next several weeks to be in the best position possible to compete for a sectional crown.
The Amherst boys basketball team received 38 combined points from Mitchell Carey and Samuel Woodruff, but couldn’t pull out the road victory in its 61-53 loss to Longmeadow on Tuesday night.

BELCHERTOWN — The visiting Hampshire girls basketball team continued to hang around as it trailed Belchertown by 10 in the third quarter – looking to make a push to really put pressure on the Orioles.

Some high school basketball teams have reached 10 of their 20-game schedule already, and now at about the midway point of the regular season, it’s safe to say there has been some high-level basketball across Hampshire County so far this winter.
The Holyoke girls basketball team had its hands full on Monday night, hosting Springfield International Charter School for the two teams’ first of a pair of meetings this season. Despite a strong effort early on, the Bulldogs overwhelmed the Purple Knights en route to a 66-28 Holyoke loss on its home floor.
