Here in western Massachusetts, we pride ourselves on taking care of each other. But right now, too many of our friends and neighbors are suffering — not from a lack of medical care, but from a health insurance system that puts profits ahead of people and just costs too much. Some companies that provide health insurance in Massachusetts plan increases of 10% or more, increasing what many pay for coverage. I really appreciated Cynthia Chamberland’s recent letter in the Gazette supporting the Massachusetts Medicare for All bill, but with the situation in Washington, now we really need this bill passed.

The current administration’s first 100 days have passed and neither the Senate nor House has seen fit to activate or defend its constitutional role in managing the affairs of our country. The work of structured, consensus-driven decision making by our elected representatives for the benefit of our entire society has been arbitrarily dismantled by a small handful of zealots committed to governing by the few. Cruelty and revenge are now the primary drivers of daily administrative initiatives instead solving the problems posed by climate change, economic inequality, or racism. The cabinet of incompetents, appointed for their personal loyalty instead of competency to support fulfillment of their agencies’ missions, has exposed our country to further intrusion by hostile forces, alienation from our allies, and diminishment of potential for making our country even greater. Now is not the time for citizen spectators; it is time for us to persistently advocate for DEI, which harnesses everyone’s potential to keep us on the path to greatness.
We all have seen years of movies about the critically important historical contributions of people of color and women to science, health, space exploration and education. But our current president, without resistance from elected Republicans, has fired Gen. Charles Brown, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; Adm. Lisa Franchetti, chief of Naval Operations; and Adm. Linda Lee Fagan, U.S. Coast Guard commandant.
The Supreme Court created an individual, who by virtue of his elected office, can now consider his actions above the law that governs our rules and norms. The court expected possible exceptions to be judged by the court. Tradition says others should bring those cases to the court.
