It was very concerning to learn about the fire at the Hairston House in Northampton. It should have been front page news that 15 men have been displaced from the fire and several fire departments responded, in my opinion.

Thanks to the fire departments the house wasn’t totally destroyed from what I understand. The Hairston House provides a home with support services and basic needs for men recovering from substance misuse. It’s vital that the men have a place where they can call home even if it’s a temporary home while they get back on their feet. Some of the men have jobs and now that they have been moved out of the city. It’s not likely that they can keep their jobs.

The Gazette reported that the U.S. overdose deaths topped 100,000 in one year. We could use many more Hairston Houses and I think that would reduce overdose deaths and save many lives.

Housing is a critical aspect of recovery along with an effective care plan, in my opinion. I hope that you will consider voting for the Hairston House for a Florence Bank, Community Choice Community Grant Award. I did.
