Lawrence Pareles: For the People Act would protect democracy

U.S. Sen. Ed Markey met with leaders of Indivisible and other progressive groups from across Massachusetts in a 45-minute Zoom call on June 19. Leaders of grassroots groups from the Berkshires to Cape Cod asked to meet with Markey to press him to take more visible leadership in the fight to pass S1, the For the People Act, and to protect democracy in America.

Markey stated that he supports of S1, and views this bill as the most urgent and important bill being considered by Congress. He added, “If S-1 doesn’t pass we may lose our Republic so we are fighting like hell.”

Markey stated that the “Big Lie” is behind the proposed 400 state bills aiming to curb voting rights and make it much harder for Black and brown people to vote, and said that “S1 and the filibuster go hand in hand, and we’ll probably have to repeal the filibuster rather than reform it, [because] it’s blocking our entire agenda.”

When several people on the call asked about strategies for passing S1, Markey recommended that we pressure members of Congress to vote for S1 and if necessary, to end the filibuster. He encouraged us to continue sending postcards and making phone calls to constituents of Sens. Manchin and Sinema and other moderate Democrats, stating that “senators are creatures of stimulus and response. When I get 500, 1,000, 2,000 calls, you bet I pay attention, and that’s true for all my colleagues.”
