Sidney Moss: Veteran of D-Day touched by article

The article in the June 7 Daily Hampshire Gazette, “Normandy commemorates D-Day with small crowds, big heart,” touched me deeply.

I am one of the very few remaining of the thousands of troops who landed in France in June 1944 surrounding D-Day. Even though it was 77 years ago, that landing remains fresh in my memory as we young and inexperienced troops faced death immediately from a powerful and determined enemy.

I hope that readers will remember that what happened on D-Day meant loss of real people, some of my buddies, and that it reveals the heightened tragedy of war and especially the impact of losing so many young soldiers, many of them teenagers like I was.

Please keep those young people and their sacrifice in your thoughts.
