Richard Hendrick: Thumbs up

“Well done Northampton City Council, well done,” David Murphy cynically closes his May 31 opinion column, “Council is undoing 20 years of PD progress.”

I do not believe that the City Council has been motivated by self-interest or that they are lacking in human sincerity or integrity and thus deserving cynicism. To the contrary I give them a genial round of applause and thumbs up!

The council and mayor’s endorsement of the recommendations of the Northampton Policing Review Commission, in particular the formation of a Department of Community Care, does not dismiss the good over the past 20 years of the community’s support of the Police Department — of it voluntarily seeking and obtaining accreditation, of it building a new building, of its leadership and the like. It is simply moving forward by reimagining policing. Not an either/or, but rather both. And our community will be the better for it .

Well and courageously done, Mr. mayor and City Council!
