Rebecca Rose-Langston: Icy roads

We need to do better to protect people on the roadways. I just drove my daughter to school and barely made it home alive because of the freezing rain that made the roads into skating rinks.

The freezing rain was forecasted, but most roads were untreated, as far as I can tell. I was in Easthampton and Northampton, but I’m assuming it was a widespread problem.

Driving in second gear at 15 mph with snow tires, I should not be skidding up hills, unable to stop at all at intersections, and unable to even make it to my front door. I could barely get back to my house on foot, after parking my car at the top of my street.

I bet there will be a lot of accidents this morning (Jan. 5), and plenty of people like me with unnecessary anxiety attacks. I’m not an especially nervous driver or prone to anxiety attacks, but I didn’t know if I was going to make it home alive.

Please don’t scrimp on road treatment, even if it’s not especially environmental, even if it’s not cheap. We should be able to get our kids to school without taking unnecessary risks with our lives.
