■Northampton’s 21 Pleasant St., next to the post office, is the new location of the latest store in Fabric World’s New England chain. This new Northampton Fabric World opening marks the 20th in the New England area — and a boon to the woman who would rather spend her time sewing than running from store to store to get what she needs for her creation.

■A new Mr. Steak restaurant, the 206th of the national chain, is scheduled to open in April on King Street. The building is a 128-seat, one-story unit with a plate glass and used brick front, and a shake shingle roof which lends it a pleasant “western” atmosphere.

■Harlow Luggage has moved from 200 Main St. next door to 196 Main St., doubling the store’s floor space. The move, owners Susan and Leon Drzewianowski said, is a response to increased demand for luggage, briefcases and travel items.

■A professional audio company and speaker repair shop will open this week at 492 Pleasant St., a storefront previously occupied by a futon and mattress shop. Tony Caliento, owner of ATC Audio in West Springfield, said he is opening a second store in Northampton to better service his clients in the area.

■Smitty’s, a general store, breakfast nook and hub for the city’s Bay State Village for four decades, will close this weekend. Its owners said they couldn’t recover after the closing of the nearby Clement Street Bridge in 2007 drove away customers, many of whom never returned even after the bridge reopened.

■The Hilton Garden Inn project seems to be dead. Mayor Clare Higgins announced Friday that the city has denied a request from the Pioneer Valley Hotel Group for another 60 days to put together a financing package for its planned $14 million, 112-room hotel and parking garage at the Round House lot behind Pulaski Park.
