■In the traditional American Circus atmosphere of the Big Top, the Clyde Beatty-Cole Brothers Circus, the world’s largest, will present a performance in Northampton Sunday at the Tri-County Fairgrounds under the auspices of the Lions Club. A featured animal act will include Dave Hoover tempting fate by combining those natural enemies, lions and tigers, in the steel arena.

■Kirk Parsons, Gazette-Kiwanis Soap Box Derby director, announced today that 32 drivers will compete in the sixth annual racing event, scheduled for July 12 on Locust Street in Northampton. Top prize in the “World’s Gravity Grand Prix” is a $500 savings bond, a trophy and an expense-paid trip to Akron, Ohio, to compete in the All American competition in August.

■Don Muller Gallery at 40 Main St. has been named one of the top 100 retailers of American craft by Niche magazine in conjunction with the Buyers Market of American Craft, a trade show held in Boston.

■David Guistina, a native of Easthampton, has joined WAMC Northeast Public Radio in Albany, N.Y., as director of special projects. Guistina formerly worked at a Utica/Rome, N.Y., radio station in sales, production, engineering and on air.

■Area residents greeted news of the approval of casino gambling in Massachusetts with mixed feelings Friday. Many seem worried that it will harm local communities and hinder local businesses — and prey on poor people — while others argue it will prove a boon for the economy.

■After several failed legal challenges, construction of a fish ladder on the Manhan River in Easthampton is to begin this month and, officials say, be completed by summer’s end. Mayor Michael A. Tautznik finalized a $606,500 contract Thursday with a Quincy-based marine construction contractor.
