50 Years Ago

■A rare horse-drawn gypsy caravan wagon, a hand-drawn hearse, dome-top trunks and a spinning wheel will be among the items sold at an unusual antiques auction at the Hotel Northampton Sunday. The items are being sold because three storage buildings near the hotel housing the items are being taken over for the new courthouse.

■The new $375,000 Florence Fire Station was dedicated yesterday afternoon in a brief ceremony before a crowd of 100. An open house was held afterwards, with the smaller children taking turns sitting behind the wheel of a fire engine and the older ones taking in the view from atop the new three-story training tower.

■The Raytheon Co. has given the University of Massachusetts one of the largest corporate gifts it has ever received, $1 million. The money will be used for science and engineering programs, and to try to increase alumni donations.

■A University of Massachusetts economics professor is one of 29 people this year to receive a MacArthur “genius grant,” a five-year fellowship that provides recipients up to $375,000 to pursue any interest they wish. Nancy Folbre, 45, has been awarded $280,000. She specializes in how non-market production contributes to human and community development and economic growth.

■In recognition for her more than 30 years of service as a victim and witness advocate in the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, Bonnie Press of Easthampton has been presented with the Gerard D. Downing Advocate of the Year Award, a lifetime achievement honor bestowed by the Massachusetts District Attorneys Association.

■Dr. Robert J. Campbell, a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, adult spine surgeon and orthopedic trauma surgeon, has joined the Cooley Dickinson Hospital’s medical staff and is seeing patients at Hampshire Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Hatfield. Previously, he served four years as an active-duty orthopedic surgeon in the U.S. Army and completed a tour in Afghanistan.
