■A public hearing will be held tomorrow night by the Northampton Planning Board on a 26-unit subdivision in the southwestern part of the city. The development, proposed by John F. Skibiski Jr., would consist of single-family houses, on 13 acres of land north of Westhampton Road and east of West Farms Road.

■A new fabric store may be opening on Pleasant Street as early as Jan. 1. The store would be at the location of the recently closed Fabric World Shop. The Fabric World store in Amherst was also closed recently.

■Several families, including some now living in homeless shelters, were to begin moving today into newly renovated apartments on New South Street. On Wednesday, the Valley Community Development Corp., which owns the 18-unit building at 22-34 New South St., obtained a certificate of occupancy from the city building commissioner’s office.

■They came out in droves yesterday. And that’s just the beginning. Shoppers flooded area retail stores on Friday, the unofficial first day of the holiday shopping season. The time between the day after Thanksgiving and the end of December finds merchants at their happiest — and most hectic — as people flock to their stores to snatch up gifts.

■About 300 local residents braved a frosty Friday night for the annual Merry Maple tree-lighting on the Amherst town common. Excited youngsters darted through the crowd while the Amherst Regional Middle School chorus entertained with seasonal songs under the direction of David Ranen, who has taught there for 33 years and led the chorus at more than 25 lighting events.

■A roughly 1-mile stretch of the Manhan Rail Trail from Main Street to King Street will be plowed this winter for the first time since it was constructed two years ago, opening up the trail for year-round use.
